Can anyone tell me why the Dish Network does not offer HD Locals for the Cincinnati area? I know Direct TV has local HD service. Thanks,...:D

I'll give you two reasons: WLWT and WKRC. :)

Both these channels will not allow Dish to carry the channel without major consessions including carrying the secondary channels. WKRC DT2 is the CinCW and WLWT is has NBC Weather Plus.

I also think that WCPO which is owned by Hearst wants it secondary channel up and I think Hearst wants something else too, but I haven't been able to confirm that.

Finally WXIX 19 for a while had "The Tube" as its DT2 and it wanted that channel carried as well.

The local channels, charged with serving the public in this are are the main obstacle to HD channels in this area via Dish. Cincinnati has been passed over twice in the last 15 months for HD locals.

Interesting. Makes me wonder what D* did to get those, without rebroadcasting those pointless subchannels? Heck, for Ch. 19, The Tube no longer exists. And if I wanted 24x7 weather, I'd turn on The Weather Channel. About the only thing that'd be nice is to carry the PBS subchannels. At least those have interesting alternate shows.

*groan*.

(another one considering the E* > D* jump)

Tony,

Do you think making calls to WKRC and WLWT or all of the stations for that matter, would help them change their minds? I get them over the air fine where I am but it sure would be great to be able to record 2 or more local HD shows at once.

I'd love to have the ability to record 3 HD local channels at once.

The problem is not local. The problem is with the owners of the stations.

BTW DirecTV does carry the CinCW. They dropped WBQC like a hot potato when UPN disappeared and picked up the local CW at the same time. I don't know what their deal with Hearst includes but they do carry "Real Women" and Dish doesn't.

BTW WCPO is owned by Scripps, not Hearst. Sorry for the mistake. Scripps owns DIY and HGTV. Hearst owns WLWT, Lifetime, LMN and Real Women. WKRC is owned by Clear Channel and they own half the broadcasting world.

I see. Well, I guess something will have to be worked out by 17 Feb 2009 when the analogs are shut down or we won't have any locals.
In the case of cable and satellite providers, the analog shutdown is a very good thing, IMO. For example, here in Dayton, Time Warner (neither Dish nor DirecTV carry digital/HD locals yet) doesn't carry the local NBC station, WDTN. WDTN will lose ~85-90% of their viewers come Feb 2009 (using statistics of the # of OTA viewers). TW can still provide their customers an analog signal but they'll be converting digital signals to analog in order to do this and they aren't allowed to do this for WDTN (at this point).

I think they should hold out at this point....

I believe that since Dish carries Cincinnati locals via SD, this is not the case.
No one knows, but it appears that the contracts were written with the analog channel and digital channel treated separately (in fact, they may be multi-year contracts that had NO consideration for "digital" channels that may not have existed at the time).

I get my HD locals great with OTA, but it would be nice to record 2 locals at once. Why do I pay the same price as a sub. that is getting their HD locals via Dish? I think I shouldn't have to pay the same price as someone getting their locals in HD via Dish....Like others this is another reason why after 2 years with Dish I am thinking about making the jump to Directv.

I agree Dewar! I have put up small outdoor antenna, and can get major networks OTA, but NOT Channel 9 (abc). I therefore do not get Lost in HD! (I'm glad that NCAA Tourney & upcoming Masters are NOT on Chan. 9!) Bottom line, we're paying same as other subs who get HD locals and who DON'T have to go through time & expense of putting up OTA antenna...

(I don't understand why E* can't get same "deal" as D* with these stations)

I pay the same as you guys, and Dish doesn't carry my HD locals, and I can't get them via antenna. I want my HD locals a lot more than I want to save a dollar a month. If it would motvate Dish to hurry up and get my locals I would be glad pay a dollar or two more for them.

You guys should try "moving" to a HD local market. I did it, it works fine. This way I record 3 locals at once. I feel that if Dish is not going to give my locals I will get them myself....They only thing different is the locals news. I changed my physical address to my friends house in Atlanta.

I've considered "moving" but with all the rumored changes re "eastern arc" and moving locals (eg cleveland) from one sat to another, I've decided I can hold off to see what shakes out in the next few months...

That is the reason I switched to D* almost a year ago. I now have all the locals AND CinCW but D* doesn't have WLWT's 5-2. I may have been happy with my OTA, but as someone else noted WCPO is a VHF digital and I cannot get it reliably. I seems ridiculous that they are the ONLY VHF digital in Cincy. Oh, well, it's E* loss. D* hardware is not quite as nice but it's been worth it.
