OK,
Up front, I did a stupid thing......I bought a used HR21-700 off Craigslist.

Now DTV tells me that the receiver was leased and not owned plus the former subscriber has an outstanding balance so they will not sell me a fresh Access Card or activate this receiver........ever. :(
But they tell me in email that they did remove the receiver in question from my account records and that I do not have to return it to DTV. :)
So I have a useless HR21-700.
Anyone have any ideas how I can get this activated

Sounds like the only way is to pay off the outstanding balence.

If you do will the box still be considered bought by you or will it be a leased receiver from Direct??

Find the nearest circular file and file it. You just learned an expensive lesson. Check out the RID# before you buy or bid with D* to be sure it is clear to transfer ownership.:)

Contact the seller and shove it up his ______ ! :D

No seriously, you should contact the seller and either return it or tell him he needs to pay the balance or you will take him to small claims court!

Worst case, you have a 320gb hard drive, that's worth what, $40 or so...

Contact your seller - if they don't send it back to DirecTV they will face collection attempts in the $500+ range. If they are a decent person - they are going to want that box back to return to Directv.

I would Contact the Person you bought it from about it, or I would pay off the balance if is's not to much. Or you could have a screaming contest with Directv and see if you win, but I dought you will.

Actually, the seller could be charged with selling stolen property. And the buyer of receiving stolen property. I don't know of any HR21s that aren't leased.

I presume you know who sold it to you. Ask for a refund in writing and send by a trackable means. If they won't pay you can try the police or small claims court. If not in your county, small claims is iffy. You may be able to file a fraud complaint with the police department where the seller lives. You never know, they may already have other complaints.
