Scott Kalitta dies in funny car accident

I am not really a drag racing fan, but a racer is a racer, and Scott was a RACER, the highest compliment you can give a racing driver.(

Godspeed.

I watched the accident footage on YouTube and read the article on ESPN.com. Has anybody heard an NHRA representative or anybody describe what happened to cause the car to burst into flames?

Quite incredibly, to me anyway, Englishtown has a CONCRETE WALL at the end of the runoff area. When the car hit that, it exploded. Why the NHRA let that track have a race with inadequate runoff remains to be seen. Hell, 25 YEARS ago the race in Baton Rouge,LA, the CajunNationals, was removed from the calendar for the exact same reason if I remember correctly.

The original fire was due to a motor exploding. Common in all the fuel classes, and very survivable nowadays. His case was that damned wall.

I think the NHRA is gonna catch hell for this one. :(
