laptop to tv question

is there a cable that has an a/v on one end for the tv and the other end has the moniter end.like hooking up you laptop to you picture tube tv.I want to stream on my tv.is there a place I can get this cable.

What does "a/v on one end" mean? HDMI?

I haven't seen laptops with HDMI out, but there are few with DVI (video only).
Almost every laptop has VGA out. And stereo audio, some even digital audio out.

You have to start with your TV and laptop model and connection options before hoping to get your question answered...

And some TVs have a VGA input port. That's the easiest, and how I connect my laptop to my 32" lcd set.

There are VGA to DVI converters available, but not cheap.

If you are familiar with the connectors on your tv, go to www.monoprice.com and have a look at their cables. They carry several that change vga to component or s-video.

I have a tv from the cable ready days with only the screw on connector. Between my laptop and tv there is a cable from Pro 7-Pin S-Video to 3 RCA, 6 ft. and a four input video modulator switch. The cable converts a headphone jack and s-video connection to three rca jacks. The modulator connects the composite jacks to the tv's rf connector. With everyone thinking about moving to high definition you can get a good sized, used tv inexpensively.

A few of the Dell models have HDMI out. I'm looking at the XPS 1530.

I just had the XPS M1330 in my hands yesterday and it does have an HDMI.
Had no problem feeding a 61" Samsung LED DLP. Don't know how good/bad HDCP is handled.

Don't know about the 1530, but if you are looking to get one and plan to use Win XP, you should
be ready for the setup time to double: the 1330 does not have XP drivers on Dell site.
You can make it work but it will take time.

I just purchased a Sony Vaio about 2 weeks ago, and I got it with an HDMI and a Blu Ray Reader/Writer, and it works great. I have already used the HDMI a few times. It works just like my VIP 622. TV doesn't seem to have any problems with it.

A good friend bought a Vaio with Vista on it about 10 months ago, and he said at first the learning curve was kind of big, but now he actually likes Vista more than XP. He hasn't really had a ton of problems with compatibility like so many people have with Vista. In my experience, I haven't really noticed I was using Vista. To me it still feels like Windows, I think after some time it will grow on you and you will be fine.

There isn't a cheap cable if that's what you were hoping for.

There are devices that will convert from 15 pin VGA to TV and most of them are awful. Most of them are more expensive than replacing your laptop with one that has a dedicated analog video output.

I like Vista.
The problem is, it doesn't play nice with some packages, e.g. ArcGIS 9.2. Even with all the updates and patches.

If you decide down the road to install Windows XP on it, remember that standard bootable OEM OS discs won't see
the hard drive: it uses the latest Intel AHCI not supported in XP. It is not too hard to work around but will need some fiddling...

I have to chuckle when I see people talking about their personal gear and then drag some vertical application into the conversation that has little to no business on a personal computer.

Why does ArcGIS have no business on a laptop PC? It works under XP. And I mean works, not starts.
I don't think I ever used Home versions of any Windows OS...
And btw, a similar laptop works fine with an Oracle payroll database over Novell.

Please elaborate.

The PC is used for HIV research in the field in India and also used for presentations.

Note that I said "personal computer". The key word being "personal".

I think that at the point people buy a computer or an operating system because they want to work at home, they should be shaken vigorously (unless they have a home based business).
