HR20-700 Overheating

One of my HR20-700 DVRs that I've had for 10 months now started overheating a few days ago. The unit has been in my entertainment shelf for the entire time and has never done this before now. I can hear the fan working inside (not sure if there is one or two on the HR20 - but I hear something), but the unit is suddenly getting really hot, even though nothing has changed in the environment. The unit was installed into the shelf by D* last September and has 4 inches of open space above it, two inches on each side and 10 inches of open space behind it, so I think it is adequately ventilated - at least the tech thought so that installed it. The only thing that I can think of that has changed was the new firmware release a few days ago - and I can't see why a firmware release would cause overheating. I'd appreciate any ideas folks have.

Hold down the info button until a screen comes up then look for the temperature. Up to 127 degrees is considered normal. If it is too high you could ask for a replacement or put a $20 laptop fan on top of it. They will run off of the USB port on the back o your HR20.

Thanks for the info. The unit in question is running at 127, while the other two are running at 111 and 120. I may look for one of those laptop fans for now, as we've got a lot of recorded shows we'd loose if I had to replace it under the PP.

Mine was up too 127 as well a few days ago,but went down to 122 ,and its been around there now ever since.

Are all three HR20-700's.
The newer ones run abit cooler, which would explain your 111* reading.

I have had the same problem, once I put a dedicated fan on the unit it stopped overheating...

I tried the fan deal and then quite doing it when I determined that 127* was pretty much the high end and it wasn't going any higher and I was not haveing any trouble with it.

127 seemed to be constant on this one and since this unit is in the family room and used all day, by early evening it was shutting down the last few days. Yesterday afternoon I switched the HR20 to another shelf where the PS3 was as that shelf allowed for 9 inches of clearance above it. Since then, the temps are averaging 122 - 125. This should work for now as the PS3 is only used for maybe 3 hours at a time 4 to 5 times a week between movies or gaming.
