We own a two family house, living in half and renting out the other. A prospective tenant noticed our two DirecTV dishes and asked if we'd allow him to get it instead of cable, if they rented the apartment . I said that we'd be ok with that. After he left , my wife asked me if we'd have to have two more dishes on the house or could they just use the dishes that are up there. I didn't know.

Understand, I'm not looking for anything illegal. It would be two seperate accounts. Has anybody else run into this and if so is there a downside to it? As it turns out, he didn't move in so I'm curious now more than anything else.

All the dishes do is collect the signal and distribute it out to the receivers. It's the receivers, and more specifically the access cards, that determine the programming on the account. Therefore, there would be no problem with two accounts sharing the same dish (think multiple dwelling unit setups.) You'd just have to come to an agreement about who would pick up the tab for any maintenance involving the dish. That would be the only possible downside I'd see.

And that covers that :)

Mark,
As Newshawk pointed out, there is nothing wrong with doing what your suggesting.

The amount of total rec's would be the only issue and that would be the only thing, if more than 4 tuners were required between you guy's they would simply add the appropriate Multiswitch and that would be that.

IF your already using the 5 LNB set up then th dish would not be an issue either, if your not using the 5 LNB set up, you'll eventually want to go that route and it would be a good oppertunity to upgrade.

When your tenant orders make sure you set him up as a referral for the $50 credit. Have him let the sales guy know that there is a dish there and you may need a bigger multiswitch to be able to share it.

Trace your lines from the dish and find a box that the 2 dishes go into, if there are unused outputs he could use those, if there are not enough you may need a bigger switch.

you should have one of these

DirecTV will supply the needed one, if you have a WB68 and are using all 8 outputs you will need the WB616 which may be an extra charge or can be bought on ebay or the sites sponsors.

when I had Dish, me & the neighbor guy shared the 2 dish setup (we live in townhouses)

I had the 110/119 that was already there
he had los issues where he wanted the dish but had los for 61.5
I didnt want another dish for 61.5
so we used the setup. He got the DP34 and we had no issues for 2+ years until he switched to Direct. By then Dish had migrated all the "split" locals to 110 so 61.5 wasnt needed

Jef,
Can you give the OP the corect phone number for a referral.
I had a referral and my buddy called in and set every thing up and we were told that seeing we did not call the correct number and we were not able to get the referral credit because we called the wrong number.

Thanks guys. I knew what it involved technically, but wasn't sure of the legality. Would definately need a bigger switch. I use 7 of the 8 outs now with 3 TiVos and a regular receiver. As I said, he decided not to rent with us, but I think the availability of DirecTV might be a good selling point. No extra dishes would make my wife happy and we all know that's a good thing.

Oh, and thanks for reminding me about the referral. I'd forgotten about that.
