Does anyone know for sure How long Dish is going to support the 942 receiver? I really do not know what to do. Like I stated in a few posts I keep getting "hate Mail" and phone calls from dish looking for me to surrender my receiver and upgrade to a newer one. I don't want to jump the gun before I have to and I do not want to commit to a 24 month contract for a new receiver. Just looking for a straight answer..

On an off topic.. I do own my receiver and I have about 75 programs On my DVR for my 4 year old son. There will be hell to pay if I switch to a new reciver and loose all his shows.. Is their any way to copy from one receiver to another one? My 942 does have a USB port on it..

The "hate mail" is just informing you that as soon as December 1 you will have no HD reception through Dish Network.

The 942 will still work with OTA HD and Satellite SD, but no Satellite HD.

? ? ?

The way that the people at dish made it sound that after a certain date "X" which I keep getting different dates depending on which person I talk to that the receiver will not be opertaional at all... I guess it's a bit misleading They said due to the mpeg2 that the receiver has??? I guess they are trying to get me to commit to a long term contract which is NOT what I want to do and sell me or lease me new equipment?? I do not get the HD programing through dish anyways. I use the receiver to record OTA HD.

1. The upgrade offer requires no programming commitment.
2. Your new receiver is leased, but if it is your only receiver, there should be no lease fee.
3. If you do not subscribe to an HD package, you should be able to get the "HD Enabling Fee" waived.

Dish will work with you if you tell them all that you want is basically what you have now--just with a supported receiver. If you talk to the right person you should be able to negotiate a deal where basically the only difference is that you will need to return the receiver if/when you cancel service.

The 942 is one of three (3) receivers that as a result of the TiVo court case DISH must shut off because they violate TiVos patent the 721 and 921 are the other 2. DISH is not choosing to discontinue service but is following the COURT;s ruling. Procrastinate if you want but yoa are the one who will lose broadcasting DISH has advised you of the availability of a replacement, they can't force you to accept it.

Buy -VS- Dish in it up promo

I'm seriously looking at getting a 722 and just out right buying it. Like I stated before I don't want to get locked into a 24 month contract with dish and have to pay for the HD programming with their new promotion. I think If I stick with the programming I have already in the end I'm better off $$ wise. Don't get me wrong I'd like all the HD programs but I get the HD OTA for the major 4 networks and I'm happy with that. No one has responded to as to when they "dish" is no longer going to support the recive I have now. Does anyone know of the date for sure?

The 942 will probably not get updated to work with the new smart cards and Dish wants to finish the swap in 2009. If you buy a 722 you will have to pay the $7 no hd fee, you're probably better off trying to get a 722 through the upgrade number because they can waive that fee.

You own the 942, just keep it if your shows are that important. As far as I know, you can still watch recorded programming without a satellite signal; just deactivate it if you get a new receiver. Of course, you'd then probably have to buy a 722 outright or pay a fee to upgrade while keeping your 942. If you don't want to pay HD fees and the 722 would be your only receiver, just go the cheaper route and get the TurboHD packs for $25 to $40/mo, strictly HD programming (depending on the channels you watch).

I think the bottom line is, the deal you get really just depends on who you talk to and how well they can do their job. :p

so they will waive the dvr/hd fee if I get a new receiver through them on the lease program? But if I buy one out right I'll have to pay the fee and the HD programming even know I don't want/need the HD programming? Times are tough and I do not want to pay for an updated receiver just because they have a law suite againt thme on the receiver I have. I should be penalized because of their listagation. If I knew for sure that I I bought a 722 out right and my programming would be the same price I'd be all over it.. I guess I'm gonna hve to call and see what the scoop is.
Anyone have an EASY way to copy programs off an reciver to a new one? I do not have a DVD recorder just a player.

Not likely.

If you don't need the HD programming, just get a 625. No reason to have the ability for HD if you won't use it.

The 942 is a "legacy" HD receiver; it's on the out. Dish no longer offers the HD package that was offered with those because there is many times the HD programming available now that a 942 just cannot receive with it's older MPEG2 encoding.

DVD recorder or VCR is the easy way.
