Has the DTVPal DVR started shipping yet? (Yes)

The box obviously has networking capability, which means PPV, VOD, web streaming and gaming, online shopping...all kinds of revenue streams which need the smart card.

PLEASE do not use TVGOS mode!!!!

It is only for those with an external TVGOS device. It says so in the manual.

If TVGOS is available in your area, the Pal DVR will pick it up and you will see a TVGuide logo on the EPG screen.

If it did QAM I'd have to have one. With the limited OTA I can receive I guess a HTPC still makes more sense.

Because I'm a fish lover (That's right. I did it- for the Halibut!), I plugged it in to my network. It immediately said "Ethernet detected." So I went to menu, broadband, network setup - all was well. Then backed up one, and selected software update. It immediately said there was a new update. It took maybe 30 seconds to download, maybe 90 seconds to install. Then it said "searching for signals" & "none found" and then "update successful" or something similar. From F201 to F202.

Now for the "surprise."

I "was feeling lucky," so I removed the card. Still worked. Reinserted the card. No response, kept on working. Turned it off, removed card, turned it back on. Worked fine. Put card back in and left it there.

Tomorrow, I might take another crack at cracking open the case.

To me, the picture of the DTVPal DVR blows the 722 out of the water. Both set on the same OTA HD channel, in comparison, the DTVPal is superior in sharpness, color and detail. The 722 is connected via HDMI, the DTVPal via component. I'm gonna swap cables and see if it's still that way, especially since I'd have to buy another HDMI cable. If the component is better, I'll leave it that way. So far I have really no idea, why to use the card that came with it. Everything works fine without it. I thought I'd fire it up the first time without, because I got a OTA machine, and I refuse to accept I have to use a card for free OTA. I'll put the card away for now.. I'd recommend, everybody fires their DTVPal up without a card for now. We'll see what the future use for it is gonna be.

BTW, Dish got into CableCard business recently, guess we will see something soon, what will support QAM and encrypted channels.

I don't care about encrypted, just clear QAM would be great. Seems like it should be an easy addition. Pretty much every HDTV now includes clear QAM support. Even the cheap ones. Not too long ago it was a feature you had to look for.

Just got my DTVPal DVR tonight and tried it out on a small Samsung LCD in the bedroom using HDMI. Very good picture, and the tuner sensitivity seems to be about the same as the one one built into the TV. Plan to move it downstairs tomorrow where I'll have to connect to the bigger plasma with component, so I'm glad to see that you had good luck with yours. I'm currently using the tuner on the 722 for OTA on that TV and will be interested to see how the sensitivity of the DTVPal compares to it.

Also, just wondering how you and Navychop have dealt with the remote conflict problem between the DTVPal and the 722. I guess I could use the 722 UHF remote to turn the 722 off and on separately from the DTVPal, but I'm already using an IR universal remote hate to have another one cluttering up my coffee table.

Guide Info

Hooked mine up tonight to a little SD TV just to check it out. It is a gift for the wife's folks. It only gave guide info up to 6am tomorrow morning. Does it populate the other 6 days randomly during the day I wonder? Any Beta testers with any knowledge on this? Doesn't appear to record by Program name, just weekly or daily recurring timers.

The key to that problem in my case was, that I have a Harmony 880. I can highly recommend to get one. I had the problem you described, and even messed the 722 up so bad, that it locked up and rebooted, while I was messing with the DTVPal DVR. You can change the Remote Address on The DTVPal from 1 to 2 and try to teach your Universal Remote all the buttons under a different device. In my case I tried that with the 880. It learned the commands, but they didn't work. So I went ahead and taught the commands in RAW mode, and that works nice. It has to do with the fact, that almost all Universal Remotes run on address 1, and you can't change that on them. You might give that a try, and see if that works. You change the remote address the same way you change it on a Dish receiver. Go to the System Info screen. Keep the SAT button pushed until all lights start blinking. Then push "2"-"#"-"Record" and the SAT button will blink three times, and the address shown on the screen will change from "1" to "2". Then take your Universal Remote, change to a different device button and teach all the commands from the DTVPal remote. If that doesn't work, get a Harmony Remote, and you can put all your stuff on there. The "Activities" function is awesome. You can change from watching TV from the Satellite receiver to watching DVD with a click of a button. The Harmony makes all the required changes, including change the inputs on the TV automatically.
Maybe the new 21.0 remote can be made to work with both machines that way.

I'm really interested in this since all we have is OTA. I'm curious of course to see how reception compares to other OTA receivers, I have the expensive Samsung one right now.

Also, does anyone know if there's any way to know for sure if the TVGuide data is available in your area or not (short of gambling $249+S/H)? Our local stations' PSIP is a horrific joke, and two of the major network stations' clocks drift anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours off. I'm just worried how that would affect using something like this that relies on OTA data. If they came out tomorrow with a software update where I could choose to get guide data over the Net (and sync the clock too) then I'd order one on the spot... but until then I'm afraid to take the jump on this one.

I've read this whole thread,I'm trying to figure out for a friend. I see it has an OTA ASTC tuner, but does it split it internally allowing you to watch and record two different channels? On the DTV Pal website it says this: "One ATSC antenna input for two over-the-air digital broadcasts"

But I just want to make sure before my friend spends $250. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks! I intend to leave the card out, also. Have you been able to do the update without the card installed?
