Favre to Retire (Again)!

No, what I am saying is that winning a superbowl doesn't automatically make you great.

I think he was a good player, just not great.

I told you my opinion would not be popular.

i agree. people forget that teams win championships, not one player. if this was the case you would have all the great players of the past with rings on their fingers. think about it, trent dilfer has a ring. is someone going to tell me that he's better than these other great qb's or great players in general that didn't get a ring? to me favre was a great qb but not the best and he certainly took too many risks with that ball which explains the int's.

I strongly believe that the reason he holds the records he does is directly related to the qualities I just listed.

But, like many, I had grown tired of the soap opera his off-seasons had become, and the media's constant fawning over him.

As for the interceptions, it wasn't just the quantity of them (again, I feel attributable to his longevity), it was the timing of some:

  • the 2002 playoff game against St. Louis, six interceptions
  • 2004 playoffs against the Eagles where he threw an interception in OT to set up the GW FG
  • 2008 against the Giants, ditto
:up

Against the Greatest Show on Turf, Favre was trying to fight fire with fire,

2004 playoffs against the Eagles where he threw an interception in OT to set up the GW FG

I don't blame Favre for that: remember, Green Bay's defense could not make a stop on 4th and 26!

Uh oh, looks like we riled up a cheesehead.

Yes, I saw all that and my point was that numbers can always be found to justify your position. I have no disdain for Favre, I respect his work ethic, his enthusiasm for the game, and his ability to stand up to the rigors of the position. I also respect the way he was able to deal with and play through the personal tragedies in his life. But, I strongly believe that the reason he holds the records he does is directly related to the qualities I just listed.

2002 rams game .....was horrible.

2004 was all about 4 & 26 not about the int.

2008 was a bad pass, but what cost them the game was the absence of using the running game.

But the interception was in OT. Keep the drive going and the Packers could've won without the Eagles getting the ball back.

dude.....it was fourth and twenty freak'n 6. no one converts 4 and 26.

They also should have went on the goal line with the best o-line in the game at the time and Ahman Green. That was the 2nd biggest mistake in the game.

your rational is ridiculous if you watched the game, watched the packers all year that year, and understand how well they ran the ball. For Sherman to not go for it and 4th and 26 cost the game.
Then he scapegoated DC Donatell after the year when he should have canned OC Rossley.

Nah, the 4th and 26 was in regulation. The pick was in OT and directly led to GB losing the game. I couldn't remember the details, so I found them here:

Philadelphia won the coin toss in overtime, but they were forced to punt after three plays and Chatman returned the ball 15 yards to the 42-yard line. However, defensive back Brian Dawkins intercepted Favre's first pass of the ensuing drive and returned it 35 yards to the Packers 34-yard line. An 11-yard run by Staley and an 8-yard reception by Pinkston then set up a 31-yard field goal from Akers to win the game.

GB started that drive on the 42-yard line. Good field position to get into position for the GW FG.

Oh man, Favre retires. What aggravates me is that NFL Network pre-empted "Super Bowl Highlights" yesterday AND today!!! I mean, ok he retired, what more else is there to be said? But no, they had to show all this crap. And today, I'm thinking "Ok, they show the highlights today" but NO!!! We had all this Favre stuff that was shown last year that nobody watches. I mean, with all due respect, he retired, he didn't die.

Please, I'm not wishing him dead or anything, believe me. I'm just sick of this. Was it neccessary to have the Favre stuff on all day? Who's watching it? I mean I would think even the best Favre fan is sick of this. I mean really, they had to replay the Jets/Cards game from last year. Seriously. Like as if anyone watched it when it aired. Too many people, I think were watching the Mets choke again. Btw, the game aired fine. I mean I don't think it was an nfl replay deal nor was there any crawlers at the bottom of the screen like they do with Super Bowl Classics and the classic games that they show. It figures anything for Favre. When will it end?

Couldn't have said it better myself, Mets! :up

:up this fascination with favre by the media makes me sick.

I meant what cost them the game was the 4 & 26 and I know it was not in OT.
If you need wiki to talk Packers with me your barking up the wrong tree.

I needed wiki to remember the details of what happened, all I remembered was the pick in OT. I'm not a Packer fan, but I am a football fan. The 4th & 26 obviously was huge, but it only directly led to tying the game. The INT directly led to them losing the game.

But I understand your situation. You're obviously biased in that you are a huge Favre fan, and I can respect that. I would be similarly upset if someone didn't share my feelings towards my favorite player....

For what it's worth, I've always been a Favre fan too. He was just a big kid who didn't want to quit on his love of playing football. Hell, even Jordan made stupid decisions at certain points of his career (MLB

). Favre will wind up in Canton, and well deserved. :up

Another way to look at it would be to just count the seasons each player actually threw an INT:

Blanda - 18
Favre - 18

It's a tie in seasons, but Favre wins because he has more INTs!!! :)

If you stick around long enough, you'll break some records....

Wait a minute, there. Did Blanda throw in all of those seasons? He was also their placekicker.

Actually, it looks like I was wrong. Blanda actually threw interceptions in 20 seasons, not 18. Wow, if you extrapolate out those QB only years.....
