Okay I am probably signing up soon woth directv from Dish BUT my wiring is all set up the way I want it and I don't want the Directv guy running any new wires SO if they don't give me a new SWM dish then what do I need to buy so that I can split the signal right before the HD DVR so that only one cable is need except for the last foot so that I get both HD DVR tuners?
I plan on having 3 hd dvrs and only want 3 lines from the dish or less (except the last foot of the line I will split to get both tuners on each HD DVR).

you can't do what you want unless you get swm
without swim you will need 4 lines from the dish and a 6x8 multiswitch and two lines to each receiver for it to function properly
you can request it with DTV but im not sure how it's working with them, not everyone can get it, there is conflicting reports that it requires at least 5 tuners, or some people say 5 recievers, ive personally been assigned SWM work orders for 1 TV even fairly recently
If SWM is on the work order they should be installing it, if not the DTV upgrade fee for it is $120

With an SWM installation you only need to split the line when feeding separate receivers. A dual tuner DVR will split the SWM signal internally. The SWM LNB dish can only supply signal to 8 tuners (DVRs count as two), so if you need or may need more than 8 you should have the Slimline SL3 or SL5 dish installed and have its four outputs connected to the SWM8 module. The SWM8 has two outputs that can be split to various receivers. Again, only 8 tuners allowed total. But, with this arrangement you can split the 4 from the dish and feed two SWM8s, thus giving you up to 16 tuners.

Whether or not you can effectively use SWM depends entirely on the architecture of your wiring plant. If everything is home-run to a single location, you're probably golden.

If you have splitters of unknown providence scattered around the house, you may be in for a rude surprise.

Tell the installer what you know and what you don't know and they will help you figure it out.

Since you know the existing wiring, I would diagram it to show the installer. And as suggested, try to home run what you can, if not already.

I am a installer and we were told new accounts with 2 or more hd dvr will be given swm setups or ask your installer to set you up with a swmsystem...we carry them on our trucks....beats running the 2nd line anyday.....

Basically I have Dish Network and 3 receivers and want Directv and 3 hd dvrs. So now I have three coax to were my Dish Network dish is now and were the Directv dish will be when installed. I just don't want to have three more lines to the HD dvr's second tuners.

the swm lnb is good enough for what you need and can still add one more dvr or two receivers.

Not trying to threadjack here but I've got a similar question. Our new house is wired for cable and the ideal plan is to feed a SWM line directly into the cable box outside. When I called to setup the move the idiot at Mover's Connection told me that they couldn't add it to the work order. (Short note...despite me telling them and demonstrating to them that I am not an idiot, they have continued to talk to me as such so I have taken a stance that I will treat them similarly.) The idiot also completely screwed up my system and set the current installation address to the new one (despite the appt. not being until June 4th) and then took it upon himself to deactivate our H20 and reactivate an HR20 I had laying around...which I asked if it was possible for them to do once we were at the NEW PLACE. I spent an hour on the phone Friday night dealing with a tech support guy who dodged the work order question and then sent me to the access card department who wouldn't let me finish what I was saying AND continued to talk to me like I was an idiot....trying to tell me the reason locals wouldn't work was because the installation address was changed....despite my repeated statement that the new place is 15 minutes away, in the same county, and well within the same market. So with all that said...do I need to get back on the phone and bust some heads with retention so that the SWM is put on the work order or shouldn't I worry about it? My big point is that they have the technology to run it with my current wiring...they will be allowed to drill 4 new holes over my dead body.

Setup: 2 HR20s, 1 HR22, and 1 R22.

You almost certainly won't get the SWM on the work order, if you read the posts on this and other forums you will notice the equipment that will be installed will be whatever the tech brings. For new customers your installation would qualify for SWM since you have seven tuners, that is not necessarily the case for Mover's Connection. If it were me, I would buy an SWM LNB (SL5 SWM or SL3 SWM, depending on which sat your SD locals come from) and then if the tech does not bring one ask him to install it. Also you may have a problem because cable splitters are not rated for sat frequencies, and if you have them that will probably screw up your SWM system.

If the W/O says SWM and the tech does not bring SWM, call DTV immediately and a FSR will be created and if the HSP should get him SWM equipment.

How many tuners auto-qualify for SWM installation? 4, 5? Do you have to tell the CSR you want the SWM?

You need to insure that all the cables home-run to the cable box and then you'll likely have to replace the splitter.

You don't get to make the rules based on possibly flawed assumptions.

The installer will do as they see fit and if you don't agree, you can cancel installs until DIRECTV won't talk to you anymore.

So if I get an SWM dish then only one coax needs to connect to the actual HD DVR? What about the second tuner? Does this work on the HR20, HR21, HR22, and HR23?
