Why is Dish shutting down the 721?

For $100 I seriously doubt that you really "own" the box.

That is more like a lease down payment.

Dish itself does not sell receivers, if you buy one it has to be through a retailer.

You know, I had a 721 fail on me soon after the tivo judgement. I had DHPP. When I called, they told me I had to get a different receiver and agreed to waive the dvr fee for 6 months. I just upgraded to HD and got 2 722's for free through a politely worded email to ceo@echostar.com.

When he was finishing my order, he told me that they would be taking one of the 522's (I had 2) with them. He told me that I OWNED the other one, because it replaced a 721 that I owned. Sure enough, the installer left it and told me it was mine.

This happen to anyone else? I really like the HD DVR's. Although I wish I had gotten the (K) series. I get all my HD locals via OTA. That would have been a slick box to have.

J8, thank you for your response. Did you have to agree to a commitment?

I don't know if anyone is still interested, but my 721 is still running and fully functional. About a month ago, there was another extremely urgent message telling me I'm in danger of losing my service unless I upgrade, which I hadn't gotten for about three months or more.

Then, about a week ago, I got a different prerecorded message, telling me how to take advantage of my DVR's recording ability. Weird.

Well, that is not what other members of this board was telling me when I complained and complained about it months ago when they sent me a letter about it. People on this board told me it was just due to them not going to support the 721 anymore but I knew better than to believe that. I still have the 721 and they forced me into getting another receiver, a 522, that has to be replaced TWICE!!! They gave me a heck of a time replacing it too, saying they couldnt find anything wrong with the first one they got when I tried to replace the second one they sent. The third one works just fine but now they owe me for several months of no service and now I have to fight with them over that. They almost lost me as a customer over this whole mess. Now I have a useless 721 and a leased 522 that they want back if I cancel service.

So you mean to tell me that the 721 still works? If that is the case then I want them to activate my 721 again.

Yikes, that makes me very happy that I never agreed to the swap out.

Yes, my 721 is still functional, although it will occasionally give me a hassle about having a non-authorized smart card. Popping it in and out usually resolves the problem, although it could take a couple of hours. That's not a new phenomenon, since it would happen occasionally before there was any mention of shutting down the 721s. (Oddly enough, I just got this message again tonight.)

I don't know if they'll let you reactivate your 721, and maybe it's in some range that really did get shut down, but mine is still functional.

By the way, I did send an email off to the CEO address, asking for what upgrades were available, but they only left me voicemail messages, and wouldn't communicate in writing. I tried calling back several times, but only got voicemail in return.

At that point, I figured I'd treat this like Kramer in that Seinfeld episode, and see how far I can drive the car once the needle's on empty, and just pop back on this thread occasionally to update anyone that's still interested.

You have not defined "still works".

Channels are being moved to the new smart card system on a daily basis, and the 721 software will not be updated to use the new smart cards.

it is cause of lawsuiet.... by the way my brother had a 721 also it was unused for awhile he called dish yesterday 2 actavate it and played stupid he got lucky was offered a 522 in place of his 721 and yes he ownes it ....

Soon the 721 will no longer be supported by dishnet, tech support, etc; it will also no longer function correctly in the future, will get very few chans etc; it's best to just let it die. people always make me laugh in these regards. wanting to get blood out of a turnip.

I don't fault Dish for killing the 721. I fully understand the reasons for discontinuing support.

What I do disagree with is not offering a comparable replacement as far as ownership rights, fees, and contract requirements. That's a poor business decision.
