MLB Trades and Rumors

IF they do...that would mean HUGE protection in the line-up for Pujhols...expect even BIGGER numbers.
And Holliday is finally starting to hit (currently sizzling hot). In addition he will probably hit better due to being in a better lineup and having Pujhols hitting in front of him.

Yep! The numbers will explode. The question is, what do the Cardinals have in the farm that could possibly merit Holliday?

Cafardo's Latest: Martinez, Boston, Pitching

By Mike Axisa [July 26 at 8:48am CST]
In his latest piece for The Boston Globe, Nick Cafardo reports that the Indians turned down an offer of Clay Buchholz for Victor Martinez according to an NL scout. The Red Sox then countered with a package of Michael Bowden, Justin Masterson, and an outfield prospect, but the Indians turned that down as well.
Let's round up the rest of Cafardo's rumors...
  • In addition to Boston, the Indians are also fielding offers from the Rays and Giants for Martinez, but aren't inclined to make a deal unless a team's best prospects are involved.
  • Cafardo runs through the list of other pitchers that "could be pried away," including Scott Kazmir, Cliff Lee, Erik Bedard, Jarrod Washburn, and George Sherrill. He says it'll take "a blockbuster package" to land Lee.
  • Aubrey Huff and Kevin Millar are also available.
  • The Red Sox will "dip in the (Roy) Halladay sweepstakes" if the price comes down, but otherwise will look for a righthanded bat that can play the outfield.
  • Cafardo says it will be interesting to see if the Yankees, Phillies and Dodgers are aggressive at the deadline or take a pass, considering all three clubs are playing well right now.
  • The White Sox could pull off something big because GM Kenny Williams "has a bit of gambler in him."
  • It'll be interesting to see if the Giants' plans to add a bat are put on hold after the sudden death of principal owner Sue Burns.
  • Twins GM Bill Smith may add a middle infielder and/or a reliever before the deadline. Last night we learned that they were "deep into talks and talking composition of a deal" with the A's about Orlando Cabrera. The team might be able to stretch it's normal payroll with Target Field opening next year.
  • Cafardo proposes a "swap of underachieving Scott Borasclients," J.D. Drew and Magglio Ordonez.
  • While there is some uneasiness about there not being any substantive talks between the Nationals and Stephen Strasburg, those kind of deals can come together quickly. The signing deadline is August 17th.
  • The Rangers are unable to add payroll, which will hamstring their efforts that the trade deadline.

According to this report, Buchholz is back on the table in an offer for Halladay:

The Boston Red Sox have offered at least three players – no-hit pitcher Clay Buchholz(notes), Triple-A pitching prospect Michael Bowden(notes) and top outfield prospect Ryan Westmoreland – to the Toronto Blue Jays for ace Roy Halladay(notes), according to a source with knowledge of the negotiations. Because the Blue Jays, who are vigorously shopping Marco Scutaro(notes), are also looking for a shortstop, the Red Sox may be trying to draw a third team into negotiations to satisfy Toronto’s need.

We already know that the Phills got Lee from the Indians, but the Pirates are continuing to get rid of their players. After trading LaRoche to the Sox and Mclouth to the Braves, they now traded their stud SS, Wilson, along with Snell to the M's. They also just got through trading Sanchez to the Giants.

They now got rid of 3/4 of their infield and 1/3 of their outfield in this year.

I believe it. Ownership doesn't want to disappoint fans because in another few years when he won't want to pay Buchholz. Sad situation here in C-town. We've turned into the AL version of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the last 2 years. :(

Hang in there buddy. :)

I've seen the Tribe turn it around twice in the last 15 years.

I know it's little consolation to you now, but the Tribe organization isn't exactly the Clippers. :D

They'll turn it around. :up

UPDATED: Multiple reports indicated that the Sox never made an offer of Clay Buchholz, Michael Bowden and Rayn Westmoreland to the Blue Jays. Yahoo! Sports issued a follow-up story acknowledging that its initial report was slightly inaccurate, but stating that the Sox made an offer that would include a package of Buchholz, a second player from the group of Bowden, Justin Masterson or Lars Anderson, and "lesser prospects."
The original report on Yahoo! Sports had the Red Sox offering a package of pitchers Clay Buchholz and Michael Bowden and minor league outfielder Ryan Westmoreland to Toronto for Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay. The report went on to say the Red Sox may be trying to get a third team involved in order to acquire the shortstop that Toronto covets, and that the Red Sox have declared pitchers Casey Kelly and Daniel Bard "off-limits". They've been trying to get rid of thier "STUD" SS for many years, fortunatly the Tigers didn't take him.

This is what I was saying a while back about how you could root for your teams if there lousy. I mean, how can you be a Pirates fan? All they do is get rid of there best players. I mean its ridicolous now. I mean Aramis Ramirez, Brian Giles, Jack Wilson, Nate McCloth, Ian Snell, Jason Kendall, Jason Bay, Oliver Perez etc. It never ends.

I mean I know the Mets made a trade with the Bucs but still. I mean trading guys is fine but it makes the Pirates look bad. Any thoughts?

Damn, you beat me to it. I was gonna post a press release regarding the Freddy Sanchez trade. This is the deal we've been asking for. Watch out Dodgers, here comes the Gigantes!

Well, I never thought I'd say this- there is an organization in sports worse than the Lions or Clippers.

Except, the Lions are rarely ever used as a farm club, NOBODY normally wants the Lions players that they have .... every once in awhile they have a guy or two that other want, but not often.

I appreciate the incouragement, but I respectfully disagree. I'm now convinced more than ever that Dolan is the wrong owner for this team. I've researched this latest deal greatly and it sounds like we got hosed. This was a money move, plain and simple. It's clear ownership wants no part of paying for a player when he reaches his prime. How is a fanbase or clubhouse supposed to get on board with this mentality?

Bill Livingston of the Cleveland PD summed it up rather well in today's paper...

No one ever thought in the rip-roaring 1990's that Cleveland baseball would ever go back to the bad old days, but this was the most desolate approach to it yet.

Gawd this sucks. Baseball has been such a big part of my life growing up. It pains me to be a part of what's going on right now with this organization. :(

On a side note. I picked the Giants to win the division before the season started and I still think they will win the division. My opinion has nothing to do with the Sanchez trade, it has to do with their pitching.

Even with Sanchez, their offense is still terrible. Sanchez is not the bat they needed. The needed a middle of the order power guy. Sanchez is just an average hitter with no power and will end up batting 2nd. He may help their offense go from the 2nd worst in baseball to the 3rd or 4th worst. Either way, they offense still stinks to high Heaven.

Cybok will be pissed. Jack Wilson is gone and some pitcher.

It doesn't bother me, Wilson and Sanchez was gonna be gone at the end of the season anyway, so might as well get some good young players for them.

The Pirates wasn't winning with them, so it doesn't matter if they lose without them.

They will be better, that first baseman they got for wilson is a very good prospect, add McCutchin, Alvarez, Milage, hernandez and other people in the minors and all the pitchers they got, two years they will be better.
