Eastern Arc vs Western Arc

I just got my 1000.4 here in SD and 77 comes in in the low 20s, 61.5 in the mid 30s and I haven't had any issues. Thankfully it doesn't rain here, and while I don't get any signal from 72.7, it seems to be working OK. I have received some 'signal loss' errors, but its working. I am counting the days until the new satellites go up, though. Kinda like when I lived in Seattle and 129 would drop every 30 mins, even with the large pan dish.

I don't think it would benefit you at all on the west coast to use a eastern arc dish. You would be better off using a dish 1000.2 , especially since the 129 sat is new and working great now.

So I should be on the Western Arc(119,110,etc) and get the Dish 1000.2 System?

You would be better off using western arc and a side sat for 61.5 if that is where your locals are located. I have that set up and I am covered on 61.5 or 129 where all the hd is located. Now next year once the new sats are up and there is better signal strengths, the eastern arc should be alright. But I am talking about rain fade issues here. So if you don't suffer from a lot of rain or snow issues in Kansas, then a eastern arc dish might work for you now.

I'm in the Buffalo, NY DMA. I have all mpeg4 receivers. I asked if I could get an EA install on the new house a couple weeks ago and was told, "No. you are western arc"

Huh? 129 in Buffalo has a VERY low elevation ( 19.7 ). But because my SD locals are on 110 they're saying I'm western arc. My HD locals are on 61.5. I said, "I have my HD locals on 61.5 and I have locals OTA. I don't need the SD locals.

No joy. I still have 2 dishes. One for 110/119 and one for 61.5.
Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

I signed up in April, Chicago area, EA 1000.4 dish. Many homes in the area have had sat for years, almost all the dishes point southwest. I am one of the very few pointing SE. Not too unusual to see 2 dishes on a house for WA. I have had no problems with rain fade or any kind of signal loss for longer than a split second or two.
I'm running my OTA aerial thru the sat box, which connects to the TV thru HDMI. I notice the local HD channels look very slightly different thru HDMI than directly from the TV tuner. The TV tuner may be just a bit sharper.

for new customers unless the HD locals are on 129 (or line of site issues) the customer gets a EA dish. I've seen a few of them popping up here in Minneapolis

As for GF, the Fargo HD channels are on 129 so you should have a Western Arc dish

The problem with the EA for MN is the local footprint sucks if you get west of Hutch or south of Kato you don't get locals in HD. But they are fine on the 129.
Dish keeps trying to build work orders for Emmet Co. IA for EA but their locals are only on the 129. It sucks having to change work orders all the time.

I just had Dish installed a couple of days ago here in West Tennessee. The installer had a hell of a time trying to get 129 because of some trees and the low elevation of the sat. He tried the EA as a last resort (he nearly drove off without thinking about the EA). I get full signal strength from the EA and the PQ is outstanding on HD AND SD (especially compared to DirecTV).

My installer DID drive off with no mention of the EA. If it wasn't for this forum I would still be on time warner. The site manager came out and he didnt say anything about the EA... I had to mention it to him and he said "oh yeah, you have a great view of it, but won't get locals because of no LOS to 129"

Third installer came out to do the job and said I had a great LOS for 129 but still installed the EA due to possible tree growth in the future.

Honestly I'm stil amazed by the picture

Full signal on EA? What do you mean by full signal?

That is what the installer told me. I took it as a clear line of sight (no obstructions).

Ahh... I gotcha... I thought you were meaning on your signal strength screen you had the meter maxed out. Which by the way you won't even see on the stronger WA satellites unless you have a 6 foot dish or something ;)

It could be just me, but I had previously had a WA install from 2006-2008, then I went to DirecTV for 18 months. Now I am with Dish again, and I have EA. I do not know if it is the MPEG-4 encoding or what, but the SD channels seem to look sharper on EA than they did on WA, and especially DirecTV.
Like I said, it is subjective, and could just be my eyes.

So it's not just me then?

I was going to ask this same thing but figured the peanut gallery was going to say I was nuts. More bandwidth on the EA sats or is MPEG4 better at compression (without ending up looking like Legos)

I'd say its MPEG4 better at compression since they say the EA sats are not as stong...

You having any rainfade in the last couple weeks? With the amount of rain storms we have had since the first of the month, I have experienced more rainface than any time in my 6 years with E*.

I'm new to Dish, just signed up in June, and I was getting a lot of rain fade even when it was just a moderate rain (no wind or lightning). I had a tech come out and he adjusted my dish, then told me that I have a 1000.4 dish and I'm on the Eastern arc. He claim that Dish doesn't want to admit it but this set up is prone to rain fade.
Being new to Dish I'm not sure how to take that. What do you all think? Is this basically is true, or was the tech just making excuses?
I'm in Louisville, KY.
Thanks for all replys,
