It's official CBS is cancelling ATWT!

I've heard the news that CBS announced that after more than 50 years on the air, As The World Turns is cancelled. ATWT became the last of the P&G soap operas after Guiding Light went off the air last September. I think it's the Curse of CBS Daytime. I'm sorry I had to say that.

Not a curse. Many Soaps are in trouble (the ones that are left) . I believe in the end The Young and The Restless and General Hospital might survive. Women working, more channels, so many other reasons. I enjoy watching them around Christmas time but that's all.

I can't believe how many peoples court type shows they have on daytime tv now.

There's Judge Judy, Judge Joe Brown, Judge Hatchett, Judge Mathis. It's all a bunch of crap !!

THis show is going High def next month and the stories are so out of control with no basis of reality, that I can't even understand them any more. Now One Life to Live is still relevant and enjoyable to watch , but I have a feeling that all soaps are on borrowed time. People don't watch them like they did 20 or 30 years ago. Women work during the daytime now as much as men do. But my question is where will new actors get their acting chops, if not on soaps?

my dad got hooked on soaps after he retired.

i read about this a few weeks ago and it is kinda sad. spinning world, guiding light and search for tommorrow were my favorites. guess, this means lisa miller hughes....add 20 more last names, has run out of men to marry.

It would not surprise me to see it continue on DirecTV's 101 channel. I have heard some rumors that they were in talks for that show.

If it was like Passions, they would milk it for a year or so and then let it fade out. Costs a lot to keep it going long term, but they can justify a short term run because it gains them subscribers.

Cindy and I DVR'd Passions until they left NBC.

In the days where the OTA network stations broke the broadcast day up into viewer segments, and thus dedicated early afternoons to non-working women, have passed.

The daytime soap opera, as a form, is passing away. I do not think society is the worse for its passing.

The Jerry Springer type talk shows and Judge Judy type shows are replacing the soap operas. I don't what the target audience is for that, but there must be one I guess. I suppose the target audience for Jerry Springer and the Judge shows is the same people that go on those shows.

Yes, I have watched soaps since I started working late nights in high school. I was 16 in 1978 and went to school till 11:00am and went to work around 4:00pm- 11:00pm. So the only tv I watched was soaps on Abc. Got my first vcr in 1981 and watched them recorded because I was on grave yards. I've had a dvr since 1999 and I can skip through a show in no time flat. Still watch them at work where I have a tv in the background. You would be surprised how many male inmates watch soaps . Guess which soap is widely watched in almost all the prison where there are tvs?

That makes sense...it would compete with Dish Network's soap appropriately titled, "As the World Churns".

soap operas cost far more to produce, than judge judy.

lots of writers, multiple sets, big groups of actors and actresses, long term crew to care for such a large operation........

judge judy, 1 actress judge, cop actor, one set, and a unlimited supply of stuipd and clueless people......

My wife watched this show every night...it's about time they went HD (long overdue). Anyway, the problem I have with this show is everything is such as soap opera: husbands and wives cheating, people getting murdered, everyone is wealthy yet I never see them working since they are too busy plotting their revenge on someone who wronged them. It's depressing to watch this crap, but perhaps it makes some feel better about their wretched lives by watching others suffer. Ugh!

Then again...all these People's Court like shows offer the same entertainment value, feature the dregs of society, and are cheap to produce. Give this fact and the change in viewer demographics, I think All My Children and One Life to Live are heading to their demise...unless something changes radically in the program format.

To be honest...let's al a carte all the channels in the hope of getting rid of many of the useless channels that, in my opinion, are wasting valuable bandwidth.

That does not surprise me at all about inmates watching soaps -- how many channels do the inmates get? In Illinois they get 12 at Stateville.
