I own the 510 that will be changed out tomorrow (with a 211(K)) and it has recordings on it that we haven't watched yet. After the unit gets deactivated, can I still view the recorded shows?

I have a 510 that was de-activated about 2 years ago and i can still watch recorded programs.
don't hook it up to sat line and let it try to get a signal, after 30-90 seconds you should be able to access your recordings.

Thanks. There's only a few that we'd like to watch then it'll get sold or mothballed.

Hope E* has your box marked "owned" as well. They are famous for demanding you send the boxes back even when you own them...they always mysteriously end up in their system as "leased". I just went through a big fight about two owned receivers of mine. One, I was able to provide a bill of sale of for, so I won that one...but I'm now eating over $200 on a 211 that I have to send back because I couldn't provide a receipt.

Well, I'm pretty sure I own it. I bought it from them for $75 when they had a special promo about 5 or 6 years ago. I don't think it was a "Dish it Up" promo. Is there a way to tell by looking at my account online? If they want it back, it's really no big deal as I can't get much for it from what I can tell.

They will charge you 15 bucks for the return label and box

To send back something THEY (might, not sure) own? Not if I can help it. When I needed to have my 625 replaced, I believe they just sent me a new one and I sent the old one back and it was on their dime.

Yeah, I actually had UPS come today to pick up my receiver. Dish covered all the expenses. But that was after I closed an account with them(I switched from an MDU to residential service a couple months ago). So, I think you can get them to send you the boxes for free if you have to. But I will tell you, if they have it marked as "leased" rather than "owned" and you can't provide a receipt, you are SOL. I had to call and ask...I don't think there is a place online to check to see how it's listed. You can actually just chat with a rep through the website to find out if you want. Good luck.

I think you'll find that the software has since been updated to prevent use of the DVR without it being "active".

That's OK. They installed the new boxes yesterday and did not take the 510. The installer told me that the 510 is not compatible with the Dish1000 dish they put up (replaced my Dish500). So I can't even add it on as a 3rd receiver if I wanted to. I've got an 4900 and this 510 I'll going to try to sell just to get rid of them.

This is getting ready to turn into another stupid installer thread. Of course the 510 will work with a Dish 1000.

And yes, you can access your recordings without being hooked to the dish, despite what the 'kool-aide' drinkers tell you.

thats unbelievable...even upon termination of service??? you have to pay to send back a leased box????

Yeah 15 bucks per box. Must return LNB too, is that usually returned in a box with a receiver? i dont know......

I bought all my receivers, and have no contract:)

I am now analyzing our tv viewing needs.

and not looking forward to the calls from friends who I sold on getting dish:(

i guess ill ad some info here....single tuner dvrs can access recorded shows while disconnected from the dish. VIP dvrs ( singles or duals ) will not. although.... you can access recordings if your service is inactive, say for paying your bill late. Dish will send you an empty box to return the receiver but you own that dvr ,so you can keep it if you want and just throw the box away. Dish has no interest in that model dvr only models that can be remaned and redeployed. They used to give a $10.00 credit for returning owned receivers but not anymore. Regarding the $15.00, there is a $14.99 shipping fee to have a replacment receiver shipped to you if you do not carry the home protection plan. receiver upgrades are shipped free regardless

I think some are giving advice without having actually tried to use a 510/508 that is no longer activated. YES, you can see what you recorded, or at least you can on mine. In fact I don't even have a newer card for mine and you can watch recorded programs.
