Nothing was said about a Dish 1000.4 So unless the OP comes back and says otherwise, I'm still thinking they have a Dish 1000. (Edit: OK, it's 1000.2)

I can personally confirm that a 510 will work without being hooked to the Dish.
Seems like the one spewing mis-information is you.

I'm not sure which Dish1000 he put up. He told me the 510 was not compatible because the dish is now pointing to other satellites.

Ahh, ok. It does sound like they could have installed a 1000.4.
In that case I take back my 'stupid installer' comment.
