Convert a 211k to DVR question

I'm in the process of switching from D* to E* (installation tomoorow) and am interested in the possibility of converting a 211K to a DVR possible down the road. From what I've read, it looks like and external USB 2.0 drive 50 gig to 1 tb will do. Is this right? After setup of the drive, is it a simple matter of calling dish to enable it?

Thanks,
Steve

As you read.

It has the ability to behave like one. So it must have some technowledgy that allows that to happen either software or hardware based.

Just to get you up to speed, NONE of the ViP series receivers and DVR receivers fall under the Tivo suit.

Since most MPEG-2 SD take less than 1GB/hr, most new MPEG-4 HD take near 2GB/hr, and MPEG-2 OTA HD take say 5GB/hr, you should get even more than you were expecting on the drive. As the average film is 2 hours, you can work that out for how many recordings. My mix of SD:HD films is 535:819, today. It covers 231 of the top 250 IMDb films.
BTW, an SP DVD is 4GB or just over 2hr in its MPEG-2.
