New HD space for RSN's with the new satellite?

Gang,

It's my understanding the Dish currently alots only 8 HD feeds for RSNs. Meaning that at any one time several RSN HD feeds may not be carried for Center Ice or League Pass, etc.

With the new bird going up later this month are they any plans to light up more HD feeds thus giving us more HD RSN on a regular basis? Doing that should make us about equal with DTV, right?

Since they do not show baseball nationally on EI, they do not need as many HD feeds turned on for CI and LP as Direct would need during this time of the year when all three sports overlap.

We really don't know, but my guess is that Dish will go all RSN's HD 24/7 just because it is about time to do so rather than wait for upcoming satellites.

Dish has a very poor record with their HD RSN's. The last time they did anything substantial was when Dish lost MLB EI, they immediately signed a few more to stem losses.

They have the capacity to do it now. I think they are saving WA capacity right now for the new 119 satellite. Easier to move stuff to the new satellite when you have spare capacity to swap stuff around with. But, then who knows what they think will work best, RSNs or other channels.

They are on CONUS. They need to be on CONUS. Not sure what you mean, but DISH provides baseball to local areas, which in the Midwest and West can include more than several large states.

Let me clarify a little.

Although Dish does provide baseball to all of their local areas via CONUS, they only devote a few transponders at a time for HD coverage. This is why many games, especially those on the west coast often get JIP or not shown at all in HD. This is especially true during this time of the year when baseball, hockey, and basketball overlap. If Dish were to carry EI, they would need to devote more CONUS transponders in HD in order to make CI, LP, and EI more inciting.

This is different with DirecTV, as they have just about all of their HD RSNs on CONUS full time. Because of this, they do not run into JIP issues or coverage of games on CI, LP, and EI (especially when the seasons overlap). This is evident by the fact that both CI and LP have much more HD coverage in Direct than they do on Dish.

Well I believe that you think that there is massive JIPing on HD sports on DISH, but really there isn't. It may depend on HD bandwidth available for the Sports Alt. channels. There are some problems on some nights with HD Alt. feeds, but really there is not much JIPing. DISH just needs to add a couple of transponders to provide maybe 6 more game feeds, or shut down some PPV channels. Or just put some big city feeds on 24/7, like Chicago, LA, other Western and/or large market HD-RSN's. Hopefully the problem will be fixed by the new satellite in June anyway.

Here on the west coast, there is, or they simply do not show the HD feed. You see threads on this night after night during baseball season.

My point was more in terms of sports packages. If Dish were to offer EI, they would need to turn on more HD RSN feeds, especially during the time when all three sports overlap.

There are two issues here: JIP'ing and not showing the game in HD at all.

Last baseball season, most of the JIP games were west coast games. However, each MLB team had SEVERAL games produced in HD not shown in HD at all on Dish RSN's. These included east coast games, west coast games and everything in between.

The MLB team I follow had 10+ HD games in SD.

If dish choose to dedicate the same amount of TP space to HD RSNs this year the problem is going to get much worse as many more RSN games will be HD.

End result: a lot more HD produced RSN games in SD on Dish.

Just last night alone someone started a thread about a Redwings game not being shown in HD on Dish when it was shown in HD on Direct. The thing is, he wouldn't even have known it was a Dish issue. They just assumed the game was not in HD at all. It is a bigger issue than some may think.

Bad example, because you'll notice that game is the Wings playing in Calgary. It was on the "HD" channel, with FOX Sports pillar bars framing in the SD feed.

Fox sports very rarely sends an HD production truck north of the border -- I think they've maybe done it for 20 or 30 games total this season.

All of the in-arena camera equipment is HD, but the mobile production trunks have not all been replaced by HD editing and broadcast gear. The teams do not share production facilities -- they each get their own broadcast crew and camera feeds so they can show their own camera angles to "make the case" on a play.

In most cases, from the US you can only see Canadian home games in HD if they are broadcast nationally on Versus or the NHL network, or on the rare occasion FOX Sports or Comcast Sportsnet decides to drive a truck over the border.

I cannot confirm if it was in HD or not, as I do not have CI. Perhaps this was a bad example? But there are threads like this started often, especially pertaining to west coast baseball.

Two bits of info:

- Dish does not have any current plans to do 24/7 HD RSNs. They do re-evaluate the situation regularly, and so they can change their mind at any time.

- When a game on an RSN is in HD on a different provider, and not in HD on Dish, it is almost always because the channel is not providing the HD feed to Dish. This is an ongoing problem between some RSNs and Dish that they are working on solving.
