The Dish Tea Party Thread!

If I remember correctly dish was first when it came to HD back in 2001 dish was carrying some local ABC CBS NBC in Los Angeles market in HD. They had HD up before cable and directv did when it was OTA only.

Sorry if i got on a soapbox. I just hate it when people try to wrap their latest peeve in the American flag and this one was just so far off the mark it got me on a roll---I would still like to know who the one guy was that started the American Revolution (lol) but no reason to take it all so seriously.

Most people do not have access to those kinds of speeds. Best I can get here is 1.2 mbps down, .2 mbps up. Don't see that changing anytime soon. Granted I'm in the sticks, but even bigger market areas than this can't get those speeds.

Actually just about anybody who has access to cable now has those speeds, unless you live in a time warner area! I know comcast has those speeds nation wide!

It was the point that one person could start a revolution. It starts from somewhere. It really isnt far off the mark. While yes a whole lot more of people joined in, the revolution had to start from one person. That one person is the King of England! If it wasn't for his actions of taxing the American colonies w/ out representation, anger wouldn't have grown to what it was. It sparked the reaction that happened and we all know how it ended up.

So all hail King Charlie!

It only takes one person to do something messed up to start a revolution, it only takes one person with an idea to stand up and say that isn't right to start a revolution. The revolution doesn't have to be like my example, but it could be in music, movies, ect. and can take on many forms!

Sorry bob but you are as far off on this one as you were on the century in which it took place. I don't want to hijack the thread with a conversation about American history but this is way way off the mark.

Sorry, I call bullsh*t! Average US Internet speeds are *far* under 10 Mbps and are not on the rise. See link for only one of many possible sources of info.

Even if actual max speeds (which, as the FCC is finding, are frequently, if not *usually* over promised and undelivered) at that level were widely available, the vast majority of consumers won't pay the demanded rate (this is amply demonstrated by the average subscription level).

IOW, we're far from having Internet delivered content supplant Sat or cable delivered content. It won't happen in 5 years, or realistically even 10 years. Not in this country at least. South Korea, on the other hand . . .

its all a matter of demand and making a buck. these speeds will come if people need them

just like LIL which many thought impossible in SD, and now much LIL is HD..... Charlie drove that, heck even D fought it:(

Since I have both comcast or fios available here I am looking to move to internet tv

because of Es fees.......

You must work for AT&T. Because you have the same thoughts that ATT does. Continue to ignore Docsys 3.0. Continue to ignore facts! And continue so spew bogus information from"telecom paid analysts" Or you live in a very rural area that doesnt have access to high speed teirs like most Americans do.

Fact: Comcast now offers DOCSIS 3.0-based services to more than 40 million homes and businesses in the U.S., representing nearly 80% of the MSO's nationwide footprint. Also comast expects to have that foot print to 100 Percent by the end of the year!

Source: Comcast Completes DOCSIS 3.0 Rollout In California - 2010-04-12 16:18:13 | Multichannel News

Comcast's Teirs are: 15 down 3 up, 20 down 4 up, 50 down, 10 up and they also have a very basic teir of 1 down 384k up.

Source: thier website

Time warner's teirs are:

10 down, 1 up, and 5 down, 384 up, (they are upgrading to docsys 3.0 now as they just finally adopted the technology after comcast proved it for them. And they also offer a 50 meg stream.

Source: Light Reading Cable - Cable - Slow Start for TWC's Fastest Broadband - Telecom News Analysis

Although TWC's Docsis 3.0 service hasn't gone gangbusters, there are recent indications that demand for wideband modems is starting to rise. Earlier this week, Arris Group Inc. (Nasdaq: ARRS), a key supplier of Docsis modems and network gear that counts Comcast and TWC as its largest customers, reported that 14 percent of all Docsis standalone and VoIP-capable modems it shipped in the first quarter were of the wideband variety.

To say that speeds are not increasing is BOGUS, Can you explain not only docsis 3.0, but Google Fiber, and Verizon Fios, and Yes even Uverse w/ 24 meg teirs? Even Qwest offers 12 and 20 meg tiers.

So you want Dish to only use American parts (more expenseive) and American call centers (more expensive) but somehow cut customer costs. So basically you want higher costs for the company with less revenues. This is everything that the shareholder of Dish would be against (side note, I own no stock in dish). The CEO of a company reports to the board of directors, which in turn reports to the company's shareholders. If Charlie took your suggestions he should be fired.

The average DISH Network subscriber doesn't have HD.

The average DISH Network subscriber doesn't have a DVR.

The average DISH Network subscriber probably has less than four TVs of service.

You're above average, jsq.

If Direct subscriber have HD and DVRs. Why do you think that Dish subs do not. DIRECTV: Profit Up Despite Falling Sub Growth

DIRECTV said yesterday in a conference call with Wall Street analysts that 60 percent of its subscribers now get HD and/or DVR service, a higher penetration rate than any other TV provider.

this is the problem in america today:( nearly everything can be produced overseas cheaper with workers making under a buck a hour, or outsorced to them like telephone tech support.

curious what jobs americans will have left?

paper or plastic? you want to supersize this meal?

medical is such a large part of our economy since everything else is going away:(

certinally this belongs at sonic babble, but just what jbs will be left for americans?

I'm sorry, but there is so much in your message that is completely off the mark. Plus it's full of ad hominem attacks, strawman arguments, etc.

You must work for AT&T. Because you have the same thoughts that ATT does.

? Did I mention *any* provider, technology or other specific? I mentioned facts that are duplicated in many other places, including the FCC. Most of your "facts" listed below are pure marketing drivel from cable companies. It's hilarious that you're accusing *me* of being a shill!

Continue to ignore Docsys 3.0.
What does Docsys 3.0 have to do with it? Just because a technology exists doesn't mean that it's widely implemented, available, popular or even used to it's capability. Just because we've invented Jets that can go faster than the speed of sound doesn't mean that everyone has access to one, or would even want to use one.

Continue to ignore facts! And continue so spew bogus information from"telecom paid analysts" Or you live in a very rural area that doesnt have access to high speed teirs like most Americans do.
I'm ignoring no facts. I'm paying attention to sources like the FCC and the people around me. And I live in a town that includes one of the largest 5 Universities in the country, so I'm not exactly in "Rural America". But, even so, that is exactly the point, a *large* minority of this country solely has little access really high speed access. It's not enough that the large urban centers have it, it must be available to all feasible areas.

I'll skip all the marketing crap you quoted, except to say it doesn't prove anything, and much of it is vapor. It's the same as Dish claiming 100 HD channels (or whatever), when 60 of them are PPV or shopping, or other crap that we all know doesn't count. And again, Docsis 3.0 doesn't prove highspeed adoption or availability, it only proves *capability*. Good for them for being capable, but availability and/or adoption just isn't there yet.

To say that speeds are not increasing is BOGUS, Can you explain not only docsis 3.0, but Google Fiber, and Verizon Fios, and Yes even Uverse w/ 24 meg teirs? Even Qwest offers 12 and 20 meg tiers.

Sure, I can explain it easily. As I've noted, docsis 3.0 only proves capability, not availability or adoption. Google fiber is barely into the planning stages, and even built out will only serve 50,000 to 500,000 people (it's a technology demonstration project, NOT a large scale ISP business). Fios has limited availability as does Uverse.

The larger point is, just because a service is available in limited areas, doesn't mean it's available to all. People suffer a tendency to *over-estimate* the availability of a service if they are subscribed to it, and *under-estimate* the availability if they don't. My father can't get Internet speeds higher than 24 kbps (and yes, he's in a rural area, AND that includes mobile connections), he doesn't even understand why the Internet is such a big thing, since it's so slow for him to use.

Regardless, IPTV can't supplant traditional providers until the *vast* majority of people adopt it. And that requires widespread adoption of the required services. We're just not there yet, and we're not accelerating towards it either.

I would like to add my 2 cents. I have been a dish customer for 14+ years and I nearly canceled my service due to many of the problems touched on here.

I wanted to take off one of my receivers 722 and called on a Friday night to be ready for receiving my 922 sling loaded and this is where it all went downhill. Instead of taking off one, they took off the 722 and a 622. He also asked how I was running 5 receivers when I only have 4 and it has been that way for 3+ years. They had actually been charging me for a receiver the last 3 months that I have not owned in 3 years and with no calls to dish from me, just magically appeared. I then had to call back to get the one that should have been left alone activated again.

OK, that's done but now Saturday comes and my NHL center ice season pass is missing. I call back again, the dish rep tells me this should not have happened...NO KIDDING. He stated it will be added immediately. It was added and so I thought the problems were over.
The hours on hold with a agent from India put me over the top though and I asked for a manager, which they transferred me to, and after some very not nice words, I was given a special 800 number that gets me to level 3 tech support immediately.

Now comes Monday, and being very excited about installing my 922 I get it all hooked up no problem, and call to activate. It is activated within a few minutes and I am off and running. Using the number I was given for direct help, I was calling to trouble shoot a few things without issue.

Now we jump to Tuesday the 4th of May. I was looking at my bill online again and noticed that the bill is now a 184.00 and it was 86.50 after all the hassle. I call dish again, and now find out that I have been charged for NHL center ice even though the season is almost over, and I paid for the whole season last September. NOT ONLY THAT, I had a charge on my bill for 15.00 shipping for the 922 that I did not even buy from DISH NETWORK!!! It was bought from Solid Signal out of Michigan.

At this point I was so livid, I immediately asked for a manager again. She could not believe what was happening and this is the short version of this story, the waiting on hold for hours and wasting my time were spared, and the many calls in between were also spared in this story. I talked to her for quite some time, and she actually asked if I had the time to talk to her about some of my concerns and I said I would be happy to.

I told her the customer service is awful! Truly awful, and when dealing overseas, not one of my problems was addressed correctly, it just led to another problem and another call. The knowledge of the agents on the 922 or any new product for that matter. If it is a new product or not should make zero difference. They should be well versed on any of them and be able to answer the questions correctly. As it was, I knew more about the receiver from this website that any of the people at Dish.

I know this story is not terribly easy to follow, and as I write this I can just feel the anger inside as I wasted so much of my time to simply try the latest and greatest from Dish. Honestly, there was so much more to this that I am forgetting, but for me, it took the fun out of getting the 922 and I hope this helps other people out there that think "am I the only one?".

I will say the 922 receiver is working great, not one hiccup and look forward to more features possibly being added down the road but I wont hold my breath.

I will sell all of my equipment down the road if anything happens to my bill in the future months. I own all of my equipment and it can all be easily sold on eBay.

My first post on Sat Guys and hopefully my last, I just had to get that off my chest.

Lame

This is one of the lamest Bitc* threads I've ever read. Especially the part about b-in about where the electronic components are made. China makes all that stuff for all companies. Then the other place that makes them are in S. Korea , & Taiwan. So get over that.

Comparing a company's failure to provide some tv channels or having outsourced customer service with a political revolution that was about infringements of the people's rights under the English Constitution is laughable.

Can people protest against a business? Sure, with your wallet. Don't give the company your money.

I wish I could have those speeds on the internet, but they are not available. I have had dish for about 14 years now and have had the ups and downs, but would not change it for direct right now.

And for some of those internet speeds, where I live is cableone and have the cap on usage that would really effect tv watching. That is why I stayed with Qwest since I am thinking of a sling

Could not have said it better myself.

We are complaining because we have more options with more choices than any other country and any other time in our history. Seriously, there are better things to complain about.

Bob, if Dish is this bad, then why do you continue to support them with your money? You do have other choices.
