Refurbished Equipment?

How do you know they are refurbs? I know how to tell, but most customers will never know. There are very few brand new receivers going out at this time.

Usually the receivers are all scratched up and have dried grease on the remote keys....

Dell sent me a "refurb" monitor like that. It had scratches on the base and grease on the back. Not to mention the wildlife inside the box...

I put it back in the box and left it on the deck until I took it to UPS.

They immediately sent another.

Es refurbs arent the best.

Heres why.

They spool some bad software, and end up replacing lots of boxes which come to refurb and no trouble found. meanwhile a percentage have legit intermittent troubles. if they arent seen during refurb they go back out to fail again.

the really bad boxes are lost in the noise of all the software failure boxes.

E should have a rule if any box comes back 3 times it goes to the crusher

My 622 is a refurb. Have had it a little over a month. It was clearly marked refurb on the back side by the Rxxxx number. Its physical condition was absolutely pristine. I almost thought it might never have been sold originally. No remote came with it. The directions for activating the unit also stated to use my original remote. This was a unit that came out of Spartanburg SC.

The first refurb was stuck on dual mode and the other one had some really strange LED's on the front panel. I am not impressed at all with refurbished equipment from Dish. Just my 2 pennies.
The first refurbished unit I received was stuck in dual mode preventing pip. The second one had some strange front panel LED's that were the wrong colors and sizes. It appeared as though someone had gone down to Radio Shack and replaced the original LED's for some reason. This was my experience with refurbished equipment from Dish. Back then the 625's had recently replaced my two 510's that were rock steady receivers until Dish started messing with the software on them. Both my current two 722k's and one 211k are new and function well. Down the road in a few years I realize that even they will need replacing and I will probably receive refurbished equipment. Nature of the beast with any electronics I guess. I wish that Dish could repair receivers for customers and send them back or at least have that option. Heck I had a laptop computer that was sent back for warranty repair and had the repair tech call me at home while he had it on his work bench. I was given the option to have that one repaired and sent back to me or get a replacement. Refurbished equipment is and always will be like potluck dinner. You don't know what you will be getting. I am not bashing Dish at all. I like the service....Well with the exception of the recent price increases. But that is a whole different story.
I hope this last post by me clears up any confusion as to why I feel the way I do about refurbs from Dish.;)

When I got installed, I had two new 722K's one of the new ones kept messing up after about the first month. Then they sent me a refurb 722k and it has actually been much better than the new one was so far. I could not really even tell it was a refurb it was clean free of scratches, etc..

The 722k has not been out all that long. I wonder what a refurbed 625 would look like.:D
Maybe Dish has gotten better over the years. I would hope so. I meticulously maintain and take care of all my stuff. If I was to return a receiver to Dish outwardly it would look new, thats not the case with some folks. I have seen some really rough looking receivers.

I've gotten refurbs, clearly marked as such with a sticker on the back. Worked fine.

Well, I have experience with several Dish refurbs. I can't remember if my 501 I got from Dishstore several years ago was a refurb or not. It's still going strong many years later. Then my 721 I got off eBay was a refurb. I wanted to get it from Dishstore but they no longer had any left so I got it off eBay. It looked brand new when I got it as well as the remote and everything else. If the add hadn't stated that it was refurbished I'd never have known. It worked for a few years until the hard drive died. A month or two later they cut them off anyway due to Tivo suing them. Then the next receiver I bought was a VIP722 to replace the 721. I bought this new from Dishstore.net. I ended up having an issue with it under the 1 year warranty. Probably around 8-10 months but I can't remember exactly. Anyway, Dish sent me a refurb. It looked new as well as worked like new. I ended up adding the Dish home protection plan right after the warranty ran out just in case I had another issue. Sure enough about a year after I had gotten this one if it was even quite a year this one had the hard drive die too. They sent me another refurbished unit and that's what I'm using now. All is well so far. It looked new as well as works fine. So I can't complain about the refurbished units. Now I can't say the quality of the 722's has impressed me, but the refurbished one lasted just as long as the new one I got. So I've not had these bad experiences with Dish Network refurbs that everyone else seems to have. Now I don't doubt they have these issues, I'm just saying that I haven't had them. All of the units I've gotten have looked new and worked properly.

How do you know they don't? I've never heard of anyone seeing the same box more than twice.

Here is my last comment on all of this.
How many people here would buy a used tv, stereo, car, etc, etc at the same retail price as a new one? I would venture to guess no one. It is the same thing with our receivers. We all would want a new receiver as opposed to something that is used with history we know nothing about. Dish does however back up their receivers by replacing them if something goes wrong with it. In some cases refurbished equipment may be better because during production of new equipment there may be something wrong and refurbished equipment gets the updated fix during the process. I can't say that every box Dish sends out that is refurbished is junk. I would however still want to have a new box. Would you want a refurbished box that has many hours on the hard drive? You just don't know, or I don't. What I do know is that I pay the same price for a new box or a used box. Dish took away the advantage of owning the equipment.

we have no way to track the roo numbers.

but when people get 4 or 5 refurbs that dont work well.

thats a sign of a QC issue

Given all this refurbs I have got all looked physically great. I suspect every one gets a new top cover and new remote.

often equiptement that looks good will get tech troubles ignored.

this is a well known in the service industry

The thing people seem to over look here is that Dish owns the leased equipment. You do not pay retail price for it. Yeah you may have paid $150 to upgrade to your HD receiver, but you didn't pay $320 for your 722k. Now those of you who actually own your equipment yes they may very well send you a referb replacement, but as with any warranty on any product they have the right to repair your current unit, or replace it with a like new model. Not to mention the fact they they send you a unit to replace your downed unit before you mail the old one back.
