Not sure how seriously to take this one, since kellex over at Droid-Life sometime jumps the gun, but...

Rumor: Verizon’s Big Sunday Meeting Means Name Change and No iPhone - Droid Life: A Droid Community Blog

The report is that Verizon will be dropping the "Wireless" from its marketing campaigns, adopting a new motto of "rule the air" - and will be focusing exclusively on making this "the summer of droid." More importantly, the rumor is that Verizon is not pursuing the iphone at this time.

Engadget has also just picked up Droid-Life's story.

Verizon Wireless changing to Verizon this Sunday, massive new branding campaign planned? -- Engadget

I wonder if Verizon Communications won't change their name to "FiOS" - dropping the Verizon from it... "Fios, Rule the Fiber" to match the "Verizon, Rule the Air"? -to avoid the confusion of two similarly titled entities.

BTW, HATE the new motto...

This just in: There is a rumor out that there will be a new rumor tomorrow. ;)

Actually, this one is quite interesting. Po$$ibly VZ & Apple couldn't come to an agreement for $ome reason.

That and Verizon has spent a LOT of money marketing Android, and if they were to go to iPhone now, it would undercut everything they have done so far. I suspect if they build the DROID brand for another year, and then add the iphone, they will be in even strong position, since many users will have "gone Droid" in that time - and most likely - will have been happy with their phone. But who knows.

Oh, and I suspect there will be a rumor of a new rumor in just a few hours. ;) :D

And Verizon should be glad GoalieBob isn't after them like he is Dish. :D

With how well the Droids are doing for them, I don't think being able to offer the iphone is necessary for them to compete, something I don't think they'd have comfortably said a year ago, no?

This is especially true if Droid handsets are coming that really just demolish anything the iphone offers outside of their ecosystem benefits? There's an undeniable advantage to being able to offer the Apple branded products in general, but it just doesn't seem as much of a necessity, more of an Apple needs VZW thing now, rather than the other way around?

Could see it happening eventually anyways, but in the short term I can see why it's not really that big of a deal anymore, the market has changed a lot in the last 9 months.

Come on seriously? Why bring me into this? There are other options for the Iphone, such as Sprint or Tmoblie. I'm thinking we could see it on sprint sooner than later.

i really hope vzw doesnt get the iphone, then i wouldnt have any threads to read on thier boards :)

As much as people hate Sprint, if they get the iphone before Verizon there just might be mass suicides....:p:p:p:p

Any network is better than AT&T here in South Louisiana....:)

Doc Roc- It has been pretty common knowledge that the opening of other carriers for iphone will be in early 2011. Back timing of the agreement with AT&T indicates 2011 is the earliest due to the exclusive agreement. It actually calculates out to June of 2011. All the documentation that holds any weight points to this date as the earliest.
Ad campaigns for Droid or Blackberry doesn't mean that Verizon won't want the iphone. That would have to come from Apple. As stubborn as SJ has become recently, that just may happen.

My understanding is that court documents revealed it was a 5 year contract, so 2012 is the soonest exclusivity would end (without Apple breaking the contract terms).

Another day, another rumor.... Not changing the name, just dropping "Wireless" in the new advertisements...

Update: We have it on good authority now that there will be no official name change from Verizon Wireless to Verizon -- the only thing that's changing is the use of new logos that lack the "Wireless" portion of the name. (source)

... still hate that new motto

Why would anyone want an iPhone when the HTC EVO is superior in every way? Regardless, if I weren't a SERO customer---paying $30 for 500 minutes and unlimited data/texting---I would have switched back to Verizon years ago. I simply have too many problems with Sprint's shoddy coverage.

Because they have drank the juice, you knew that, right? :)

Macrumor has reported that sprint will have the IPhone this September with Virzion comming in the fall of 2011.

If true, September would be a good month for Apple to launch it with Sprint. Save ATT with everybody just upgrading and locking into another 2 years while also pulling in many new customers with Sprint. September most likely will have the iPhone readily available from Apple and ATT so the rush will be over.
