Switched to EA - rain fade

Will I only need to pay the $15 cause I'm paying the $6.00 equipment fee?
Unless you subscribe to the protection plan or your installation was within the last 30 days, you'll pay full price for a service call. The receiver warranty doesn't cover the dish installation.

What I'm saying is that 142' is about 14 stories, period.

I'm tying to get some help here. I'm having trouble with rain fade and made an appointment to have it checked. The techs that came out were, in my opinion, ill equipped for the job (see my previous posts in this thread) and used "trees in line of sight" as a sollution.

According to Dishpointer (if I'm reading it correctly) an obstacle 142ft high at a distance of 164ft would create a problem. The trees are nearer, but not as high. The dish is on the roof so that should add about 20 ft to my hight and also another 20ft to the tree hight, no?

What do you want us to do?

If you can't get satisfaction through DISH Network, you can try a local storefront and have them do a site survey (at your expense). They usually have the equipment (a special scope) to assess obstructions quickly.

Look Angle better than 40.9 degrees

So your saying that unless the trees behind my house are higher than 14 stories, and closer than 164ft they shouldn't be interfering with my signal?

To avoid LOS issues on the satellite(s) behind the trees, you will need a look angle better than 40.9 degrees. You can plug in your location at several internet sites to determine your look angles for the satellites of interest. I calculated the angle by dividing 142 by 164 and taking the anti-tangent. Of course if your angle is just slightly higher, better hope the trees don't grow. ;)

I would send an email to ceo @ dishnetwork.com . Tell them that you have rain fade issues and your system needs to be repeaked. Tell them that when the techs came out, they didn't have a ladder and did the best they could, but you do not feel the issue is resolved. Ask them to send another tech and inform them to bring a ladder.

You should be under warranty from the work order that was just closed by the unacceptably unprepared tech.
Just call back and tell them that you still have the same issue you had before they got there.
40 degrees in elevation from where your dish is and above should be clear of trees.
The dish points at the 72 and 77.. the 61.5 is about 10 degrees left of where your dish points.

Im not suggesting that you the original poster bend the dish.
I am stating that to peak that dish most of them need to be bent.
From stamping to transportation to being tossed on trucks the dish is no longer as it was so precisely deigned. And given the lower signal levels provided for it to receive every point counts.
By bent I mean tweaked by lightly pulling on the flange on the back of the reflector upwards of 10 points can be gained by doing so... doing it in the wrong place or to much can and will degrade signal on the other orbitals being picked up.
When the dish was first issued the skew plate bracket contained washers that kept the dish from being fully tightened to the mounting. This also left something to be desired as wind could move the dish more easily than expected.
The 77 may have be in location when the EA dish went live but that sat was not transmitting, making it impossible to tune for it.
Ty for tuning this dish on a daily basis.

....

In your opinion(s) - are the signals "good enough" or should I call Dish? I just canceled the service plan a couple of months ago and they happily charged me $25. If I do call are they going to ding me for $99 or make me sign up again even though the install was done while I was on the plan?

Your $99 upgrade comes with a 90 day guarantee. Your 90 days reset after a second Tech re-points your dish.

Same thing happened to me recently. Wish I would have made the request through online chat. CSR made me jump through hoops before scheduling a re-point.

tomboy,

If they didn't even touch the dish, they don't even know if it was mounted securely, much less aimed correctly. Some of the earl EA installs didn't even get the support struts they needed with the longer mast.

Get cust serv to send someone else out

Thanks to all for the input. I played a little with the pointing and have improved the signal a little.

The first figure on each TP is the minimum signal strenght acceeptable according to Dish signal strenght matrix provided to all techs.

I appreciate the comments and I'll leave well enough alone for now. At least until the next rain shower.

The last sentence of your comment did tickle me a little. My brother in law is having major problems with Dish in Kettering OH. He had two techs out several weeks ago. They tried for hours to get him fixed up - new wiring, new dish, etc. He offered them a beer after a few hours since is was very hot out. They ended up drinking beer and smoking pot (the techs) for 6 more hours before they headed back to Tennessee. He still is having issues with Dish going out. I think I'll tinker a little before getting that type of "professional" help.

I do have to say that every dish tech I've had to my house seemed to know what they were doing. I wasn't bashing dish above - simply sharing a family members experience...
The beer and pot thing raises a red flag.
Kettering, OH and they headed back to TN?.....Umm this picture has flaws.
WTF were two "techs" from TN doing in OH?......

NO DON'T BEND the DISH!!!

D1000.4 was not released before there was signal at 77, it had to be released precisely because of the different spacing from 61.5 to 72.7 to 77, thusly the uneven arrangement of the lnb's. The reflector is made for this application.

Just get it accurately aimed and you get good signal, admittedly the signals are a bit weaker, because severla satellites are in positions for which ther were not designed, but you can get adequate performance and new satellites are on the way.

DON'T BEND THE DISH, you may warp it so no one can aim it.
I never had to "bend" the dish. Sometimes it helped to grasp it firmly but gently and give it a slight tug to set it just right. This is done with even pressure. No "jerking" or snapping.
IMO the reflector on the 1000.4 is too small.

I have one of the first EA dishes in my area and am getting rain fade every time they even predict rain. The dish is up on the second story of our home so I plan on calling for a tech. My wife doesn't want me falling off the ladder. Will I only need to pay the $15 cause I'm paying the $6.00 equipment fee?

$15 is the maximum charge for those on DHPP

I called for service to peak my EA dish. They arrived without a ladder, looked around, checked a couple of tps and looked outside and said I needed to trim some trees. Using the OPs post these are the numbers I get;

61.5 10 28
61.5 14 50
61.5 29 43
61.5 31 32

72.7 15 34
72.7 17 41
72.7 19 37
72.7 21 40

77 13 30
77 16 21
77 20 21
77 21 29

Do these numbers indicate a problem with trees? Or were the techs unprepared when they arrived to climb up on my second story roof and used that as the excuse?
Call Dish and let them know thery sent unprepared techs to your home. If they ask what you meant by unprepared, you tell them your dish is on the roof of a two story home and the tech showed up sans ladder.
IMO this is inexcusable and the tech should be fired immediately.
A satellite tech without a ladder is like a plumber without a pipe wrench or an electrician without a multi-meter

The new tech just left. Tweeked the dish.
Old numbers.

61.5 10 28
61.5 14 50
61.5 29 43
61.5 31 32

72.7 15 34
72.7 17 41
72.7 19 37
72.7 21 40

77 13 30
77 16 21
77 20 21
77 21 29

New Numbers:)

61.5 10 43
14 61
29 53
