About 2 weeks ago I woke to the led's were dim on the front of the HR21-100 and the center blue circle is going clockwise like it's booting up but it's not.

I get the hard disk error on the screen.

I've done the reset button to reset the unit and also unplugged the power for a few hours hoping it would return to normal but nadda.

I'll assume the hard drive needs to be replaced,do I have to send the receiver in to get it repaired or is there something simpler I can do to get it out of this loop?

I got this receiver new about 2 years ago.

Someone here can give you info on how get the recvr to scan the hard drive for errors and try to fix, I've done it once and it worked, but I don't remembeer the sequence to get it to do it.
Keep in mind, when you do it, it will take quite awhile to do it.
You probably will lose all your programs. (which you would lose regardless at this point)

So anyone that remembers the reformat commands please chime in.

Hit select on the remote or front panel when the receiver is booting. You'll get a diagnostic menu and one of the options involves testing the drive. Short and long test, file system check and full disk test. The full disk test will take a very long time. I forget at what point its looking for the 'select', but just keep pressing it once you plug in the power cord and eventually you'll get the diagnostic menu.

In my experience, while there are exceptions once you've gotten this the drive only has a short time to live. You might recover it long enough to watch a few shows, but I'd plan on returning it for a replacement.

If you recently had a power surge or outage, that might have just resulted in a corrupt file system, but the receiver should be able to recover on its own. That slow blue circle might be what its doing. You could try leaving it running overnight to see if it does recover.
