Gettin' closer to switching to Directtv from cable (!?). I (especially my wife) hate surprises, so I was looking to get a few general questions answered.

1. My phone jack is across the living room from where I would have the TV. Maybe 10-12 feet. Will the installer be able to make a hard-wire connection to the phone line, or will I have a "surprise" extra install charge (extra wire, etc?)

2. Are the installers [generally] fairly neat on their installation or will there be crappy wires everywhere? (I know that's a vague question, but...)

3. Could a prospective customer ask to have an installer stop and evaluate the situation before one commits to the install? Might save some surprises and disappointment.

Thanks much!

1. no charge if not hooked to phone line. I dont have mine hoked to phone line (no landline). They just noted the account when they activated it
2. It depends. I'm in Minneapolis too (well SW burbs by Valleyfair) and my installer was from Directv and was awesome. My sister who also lives in town had a subcontractor who whines because it was lightly snowing when he did the install. Both did clean up after themselves and the wiring was very neat

1. Not required, as Iceberg said.

2. It depends, every installer has his own ways of working, My experience , they have been professional and have cleaned up after themselves.

3. I would EXPECT you to do a walk thru with you before to see everything that needs to be done.

I thought you needed to have the phone connected when you have a DVR?

Nope, phone line is used for oerdering PPV, to that specific receiver, or used for caller ID if you have it on your phone.

You can order PPV via your online account and have access to it on all your receivers.

Software updates for the receivers come via your dish/coax.
