D-star is cool but seems like not very many people are into right now.

Hopefully someone besides icom will make some gear.

I doubt you'll see anyone else produce Dstar Radios. I suspect due to costs Dstar machines are not cheap.

Icom needs to allow other makers to put the D-star chips in their radios. Be nice if my Kenwood could do that.

Its open (kind of AMBE chip is not) icom is the only company to make a radio but any company can.

DVSI Home Page company that makes chip

I would be more inclined to go with Mototurbo or P25 for a ham repeater. As much as I like Icom there is nothing open about DSTAR.

Just set up a D-Star repeater/AP sponsored by some local radio groups. I don't have any equipment to use the system so I can't really varify that everything works other than reports from others. Just curious what kind of range the 1.2g would have installed on a 16 floor building using a Diamond X6000a antenna to a similar equipped base station with the antenna at lets say 40'. Might p/u an ID1 Icom radio to try it out but that is a lot of coin!
