As I'm going to be ordering DirecTV, I want to make sure I'm getting the latest and greatest DVR. I do want HD and I want as much space as I can possibly have. Is there a specific DVR model I should request?

Right now I've got Uverse and we can record three HD channels at the same time. Occasionally I've noticed it doing that, so being able to record more than two channels simultaneously would be nice. DirecTV only allows two simultaneously, right? Is there a way around that? Like ordering a second box or something?

Thanks.

Yes, only two simultaneously. You could order an additional HD DVR, which I would recommend if you can get a great price on the initial lease fee (you may be able to get it for free if you get the right CSR on your initial order). You are going to pay $6 a month for any additional receiver so you should get a HD DVR if you can since it's the best bang for your $6. How many receivers in total were you looking to order initially?

The newest is HR24. You can request it but you will get whatever receivers the installer has on the truck. The installer should call the day on installation and at that point you can ask what is available.

rugbyqueen, if you order the mrv, aka multiroom viewing, along with hd, you will greatly increase your odds of getting an HR24. You will always get one free as a new customer, the second one if you want it is generally $99. If you order through a local company, then you can specify what models you want. Like bbixler said, if you go through Directv, there are no guarantees which ones you will get.

We only have one TV, so I would only need one receiver. Is there a way to use two boxes on one TV? Can you hook them together or something? I don't need a second receiver to work with another TV, but having the option to record more than two shows at the same time would be nice.

Really? That seems kind of crappy. What if all they have in the truck is some old beat up receiver, or something that is five years our of date? I'll be sure to request it, so maybe that will help.

Yes, as long as you have enough inputs in your tv, you can hook multiple receivers to one tv. That won't be any problem.

In October, DirecTV is bringing out a 5 tuner DVR. This will be offered as either a stand alone DVR, or it can be added to an existing Whole Home DVR set up. Or it can be part of the new DirecTV Media Center being offered in October. Someone like myself ( I have Whole Home DVR with 3 HD DVRs) replacing one DVR in their Whole Home Network with the new HR34 DVR, will be able to watch one channel in HD and record up to 8 other channels in HD.

We only have one TV, so I don't really need multiroom viewing. Does that service cost the same as the regular service, so would it be worth ordering it anyway? I was going to order through AAA because they have a $200 savings deal with DirecTV.

Our TV is really old and only has one HDMI input. We are disagreeing about which TV to get to replace it, so right now that's all we've got. I wonder if there's a splitter or something, like you can do with USB ports on computers. Hmm...

Multiroom viewing is an additional $3 a month and it used if you have multiple HD DVRs or 1 HD DVR and multiple HD receivers spread throughout your home. You can record programs on 1 HD DVR and then watch them on any HD or HD DVR in your network. If you only have 1 TV that it would be a wasted $3 for you.

That sounds great, but I can't wait until October to get DirecTV. We have to have it in place for the start of the Rugby World Cup in early September. Is there a way to upgrade to the new DVR when it comes out?

How about Red, Green, and Blue Component inputs? Those can do HD so you could use the HDMI input as 1 input and the RGB Component input as the 2nd input for the 2nd HD DVR.

That's what I thought. I wouldn't mind having the ability to record more than two shows, but it does sound like a waste of money if we don't have more than one TV.

Are you sure this is coming out in October? I've heard about a Tivo for over a year that still hasn't come out.

Yeah, we've got the red, green and blue inputs. I didn't know those did HD! Learn something every day.

So just to clarify, the first HD receiver is "free" or included with your new customer order. And the second one is $99? Is that $99 for a two year contract, or per year or what?

No. My understanding is that only customers ordering the Home Media Center will automatically get the new HR34 DVR. Existing customers wanting the new DVR would need to pay big bucks to get it through an authorized vendor like Solid Signal.

The first HD DVR should be free and then you could get another free HD receiver. If you wanted 2 HD DVRs, the first would be free and then the 2nd would be $99. You could ask the order rep if they would give you 2 HD DVR's for free instead of having to pay the $99 for the 2nd one. You can use that as one of your requests to sign up for new service. If you can't get it for free, anything under $99 would be a great deal (maybe they'd give it to you for $50 off). It is a 1 time payment of $99 for the initial lease payment and then you would pay $6 a month to mirror the programming from your primary receiver (the 1st one on your account) to the 2nd receiver. As a new customer you should get the $10 HD service for free and then you would pay $7 per month for DVR service (doesn't matter if you have 1 DVR or 15 DVRs).

So you would have your programming package cost, $6 for the additional receiver, and $7 for DVR service. That would be your monthly bill going forward.

Thank you! That makes it very clear. I will do my best to negotiate.
