Is There Any Way to Tranfer Recordings to iPad?

I used to use my Archos to record my shows to watch while traveling but that no longer works with the 722 receivers. Is there any way to do this with an iPad? I also have a Dish Sling but I don't want to just stream, I want to be able to record/transfer my programs from my 722 to my iPad to watch when not near a wireless connection .

Any hardware, computer, software solutions for this ? I think it would be a great Sling feature but I'm guessing the content providers will have a problem with that.

Hauppauge is nice, but I, for one, would prefer something that did not require a PC. I dearly wish Archos and Dish would reach an agreement over HD.

It's not HD but I use my Hava Platinum (obsolete model) that still works well with my 722 and easily records a DVD-quality MPEG-2 program over a local LAN. A second step would be to convert the captured programs for use on the target platform, if it doesn't support mpeg-2 program streams. I regularly use the native Hava mpg on any of my media players, or my Archos 404cc with Cinema Plug-in, directly. The upconversion of DVD quality video by an HDTV is IMHO pretty good.

Also, you didn't mention which Archos you have. But most of them also digitize to mpeg-4 video at 640x480 resolution. This doesn't upscale nearly so well for display on an HDTV, but it should be entirely adequate for display on the Archos screen itself and might be adequate for the iPad. All you need is an Archos docking station to do that.

The Hauppage unit is also good and does HD, but do you really need HD quality for an iPad?

I just bought one of these units because you can record directly to the iPad without using a computer but it's really not that well designed on either the hardware or software end:

Monsoon Multimedia Vulkano - Your TV anywhere on iPhone/iPad

The Sling just makes much more sense since it's so closely integrated with Dish now.

Krell I have the Archos 500E but of course I'd much rather be using the bigger screen of the iPad and also not have to carry 2 devices while traveling. And yes I don't car so much that it's HD (to save space especially) as long as the image quality isn't horrendous. And I'd like to not have to use a computer if possible

Scott can you give a hint as to when we might see this might appear? Weeks, months, a year from now?

I have seen it a few times now over the past year. And am hoping we see it officially intorduced at CES.

I am just hoping the networks dont squish it before its released.

They talked about it last year at Team Summit. They said you would be able to transfer recorded shows over to your iPad and play them when you wish. I didn't hear much about it this year but I asked and it sounded like it was still in the works.

Yup. That's the successor to my Hava Platinum, which has been quite reliable. I know what you mean about the software; support is just plain bad at Monsoon. They outsourced everything to India, most particularly software engineering. Everything that goes on the Vulkano itself, as well as player software, was written far far away, and getting any bug fixes or feature requests implemented is a lengthy process if it ever happens at all.

Buy a docking station and you're good to go. No wait a minute! That's a Pocketdish! I believe you can just plug that into the A/V outputs of your 722 with the supplied cables and record at 640X480 mpeg-4. That's what my 404CC can do (with a docking station), and the video looks pretty darn good on all but an HDTV. You can most certainly record with your PocketDish without need of a PC. But downloading the video from the PocketDish and transcoding it for the iPad would presumably require a PC.

Simplest way I can think of (and "simple" is a relative term, hence why I haven't actually done this) to get video from the dish box to the ipad is:
- record in real time to a dvd recorder
- rip the dvd's to your computer
- edit as desired
- convert to mp4
- copy the resulting files into itunes
- sync to the device
By the time I go through all that crap, I'm not likely interested in seeing whatever it was anymore.

I would say that the PocketDISH is dead... if your on the Eastern Arc the PocketDISH wont work for you at all since its all MPEG 4. On the Western Arc it will work but only for SD channels.

Yes I'm EA and it won't work at all with the 722. I really hope they can get the iPad app up and running.

Yea I can tell by the broken English responses that I do get from them lol. The biggest problem I'm having now is the audio is slightly out of sync on the iPad. Very annoying.

And I can verify that this is (as "un-simple" as it is) the simplest way to do this; especially without any out-of-the-ordinary hardware. I've done this a few times for Video, and numerous times for audio (SiriusXM's Bob Dylan Theme Time Radio Hour to DVD+R to PC to iTunes to iPod in my case).
