DISH Hopper coming at CES ?

I would like to see Dish Network make one change about their new name.It should be DISH!,with an exclamation point at the end of the word.:exclamati:eureka:

I've been writing and calling it DISH for years. I always thought that DISHNETWORK is too long of a name to write and to remember for most people. DISH is short and sweet and to the point and also says how the programming is delivered: by DISH.

On FCC pictures, the 813 has no place for MT-2. But rumors are it would be USB connected separate box (ala DTV).
XiP813 - DBSTalk.Com

Without this option this concept would have limited appeal to me. I'm a mover and like having two sets of locals. I've been recording 4 shows at a time every since I got the 722k back in 2008. My local news I get via ota.

I expect Hopper and Joey to be an expensive upgrade for existing customers. I might consider anyway but I'm not fond of placing all my recordings on a single hard drive. I hope they look a some sort of Raid disk add-on for the future.

You can have a RAID array today. I do. A pure hardware RAID solution is indistinguishable from a single drive EHD to the receiver.

The more I think about it, the more I believe it would be a major mistake not to have some means of receiving and recording OTA, from day one.

If you pay for insurance, dhpp, & your receiver is broadband connected dish should offer an online backup for your recordings in case of receiver failure. Imo just another way to provide the best customer service possible.

Hope this puppy comes out much sooner than later. Would love to have this by the super bowl so I can stop watching NFL games in SD via my cable company. Hopefully some light is shed on this on Monday!

isn't the superbowl in just a couple weeks? Probably won't happen. Even direct can't get things out that fast.

I have to be honest... This is a let down for me. I would much rather have the 5 tuners in the Direct box. More popular shows are coming from other sources (Walking Dead, True Blood, etc...). This is still limiting you to recording two satellite shows at a time... Just like a 722K can do now.

I have been very disappointed with the way Dish has handled the 722K slow down problem, so I plan on taking my money & subscription to Direct. I seriously think it is a better solution. I would rather be able to record 5 shows of my choosing... Really, I am looking forward to recording 4, while watching a live sports event.

I give Dish credit for creativity on recording the whole spotbeam for locals, but I think that good programming is migrating more to the 'cable' channels now.

If they let us Buy/Lease more than ONE Hopper we could have 6 Tuners, this would work. I dont see how only THREE Turners with 3 other Joey TVs connected to it will ever work in my house with Kids watching Cable channel, ever Locals.
I also record MANY non prime time shows now a days. I really need 6 Tuners. Plus the OTA (over the air turner) to get the 5 other locals not on SAT.

Now All I need is a News and Sports Mix channel like the other guys and cable have and I am ready to switch. I have been saving money for waiting for something new.

It may work but is not supported by Dish for archiving. But I don't mean archiving anyway. I would want the Hopper to record directly to a RAID array, either built-in or customer supplied add on.

If you make any programming package change. Other changes may not require you to accept, and pay for, locals. Or am I mistaken?

Anything that would make a w/o on the account. Programming changes are the big one. But if you schedule a tech it can cause it to be put on. If you call in and an agent hits the wrong thing it will prompt it to be added and a vast majority of agents aren't going to know how to stop it or remove after it is added.

there is 30 pages on info here, sorry if i missed it, but:

has there been any mention of additional monthly fees to use this new hopper/joey etc tech?

i assume additional fees are going to skyrocket with each new technology they release, but i hope i am wrong.

====My Personal Study on Why Hopper won't work for most Families with Kids======

High Level Assumptions
--------------
I looked at my family and ask several others about there viewing habits with kids
I am also assuming Dish, it there typical way, will NOT allow more than One Hopper to be leased, you will have to buy the 2nd one at a very large cost (guessing over $600 like in the past)

Family Viewing Habits Assumptions
------
Assume a typical family night in a america on a Wed or Thurs. All homework is done.
Assume 3-4 TVs in the house. Main Level, Bedroom, Basement, Den/Kids room.
Assume family WANTs Prime time auto record turned to record all shows as they do watch some and they like the feature.
Assume Young Kids like to watch the Kids shows
Teenagers boys an Dad like Sports shows
Mom and Dad watch some prime time and movies

Results
=====
Its Thursday night.
Young Kids are watching Cartoon network on TV3
Teenagers are watching sports on TV4
Mom Watching here lifetime on TV2 in bedroom
Prime Time is auto recording

Dad then turns on the main level TV to watch he shows, only to find all 3 Tuners are busy.

Conclusion- More than One Hopper is required for households with a family of 3 or 4. Only other option is Dish should of made the Hopper with 5 Tuners like Direct TV HR34 has. I bet they did a similar study as mine and came up with a 5 tuner requirement.

I'm making broad assumptions based on what I've pieced together from multiple sources, but here I go anyway .....

1. Don't be surprised if the first Hopper, at least initially, requires a one-time $99 lease upgrade fee for a new customer.
2. That the service fee will be $10/mo which also includes one Joey (assuming that it also includes Sling, which I have heard from other sources too, but still kinda surprised me). From what I've heard DISH wants to keep the "two tv's for the price of one" marketing strategy going.
3. Each additional Joey is $5/mo.
4. I have no idea what a second Hopper would cost, but if the first is $99 then I'd expect $199 for a second. I'd love to see the initial Hopper and Joey combo provided for free, but DTV is getting $99 for their HMC so look for DISH to do the same (at least in the beginning).

Using this pricing scenario a four room system would have outlet and DVR fees totaling $20/mo compared to:
A. 722/222 or 722/211/211 of $20/mo
B. 722/722 or 722/612/211 of $23/mo
C. 922/722 of $27/mo
You get the picture.

Why the lower fees? What I've heard is that this tech has a much lower roll-out and ongoing maintenance/support expense. The Joey's are not full blown receivers and are very inexpensive to produce, so in reality there is only one full blown receiver on the account. No more ViP this, DUO that, with a SOLO here and there. No more 3 hard drives on one account - substantially fewer moving parts. One hard drive, one central receiver - one process. Think of it as the Southwest Airlines business model - one airplane model, one training process, one maintenance process, and one supply chain.

But beyond that DISH wants to have a more streamlined pricing structure that is easier to market. The current structure is confusing for consumers and makes DISH a square peg trying to fit in a round hole for lack of a better term. However, I'd be surprised if pricing is released this week. Look for this week to focus on the tech side of things with pricing coming before the end of the month.

As for deployment, DISH is very much aware of what a disaster the 922 deployment was. From all I've heard they learned their lesson. The XiP class of receivers was shipped from Echo to DISH in late October/November 2011 and all that was left was software. Since they are starting with the 922 GUI and engine, it was expected not to be to much of a problem. But again, they are keenly aware of the historical issues with the 922. They probably could have rushed this out in Q4, but held back. BTW - my 922 has been rock solid since day one.

As for current customer upgrades, expect to pay a bucket full of cash until Q4 of this year. That's the typical model for DISH and DTV (historically DISH rolls out their Q3 2012 promotion each August 1).

This is not your DISH of old. Joe Clayton is a doer. Look for DISH to be substantially more aggressive this year - which is a good thing for everybody.

As for all the concern about how the networks would feel about Primetime Anytime, I think they'd love it. Primetime network viewing has been declining for years as cable nets continue to pick away at the pack. By rolling out Primetime Anytime DISH puts network programming "in your face" requiring your to make a decision. The networks know DVR's are here to stay, and there is no going back, but by putting all the primetime programming at the top of your DVR list everyday their programming becomes relevant again. That's better than advertising!

OF COURSE I COULD BE COMPLETELY WRONG ABOUT ALL OF THIS, THAT'S WHAT MAKES THIS SO MUCH FUN! Either way, it's going to be a great week for DISH and I for one can't wait.

I've already speculated that DISH will charge a $10.00 dvr fee since it is using the same guides and will have sling built in like the 922. I also see them charging at least $7.00 for each Joey connected. I just don't see DISH giving up the additional receiver fees that they already have established ,especially since they went to so much trouble two years ago , creating the elaborate fee structure they put in place detailing the various fees for each class of receivers : $7.00- $17.00. So I see at least the following for each house with 3 joey units :

$10.00 - Dvr fee (like the 922)
$21.00 - 3 x $7.00 for 3 Joey units
------------------------------------------
$31.00 in fees before programming

And that doesn't include a Multi View FEE if they want to add that to the other fees.:(
