Scott's Hopper Thoughts

Dish doesn't want dvr receivers going along with the tailgater. Opens them up to more hard drive failures.
If Dish decides the tailgater market is important they will address it one way or another. If they look at it and think it's only 0.00001 of their users (or whatever their ROI threshhold is) then they may let them walk.

My concern is they don't really know how many units get that kind of use and are underestimating it.

For initial launch simplicity and keeping everything homogenous right now I can't really fault them. Six months from now with no change is another thing.

It is always better to have more options. The fact that you can keep your current setup, switch to an option that wasn't available in the past, or even switch providers is nothing to complain about. I am glad to see Dish compete in the MRV market with the other providers and offer something things with their setup that the other providers to not offer.

I have no preference myself as I do not do MRV and have no desire to do MRV.

My thinking is they just feel if the people who want to use a dish for tailgating or camping that bad then they'll be willing to pay for it. I myself use the tailgater but it's not a make or break thing for me. Ill just find another way or just not bring a tv. It's not a must have thing for me. The Hopper in my house is more important.

After all how can you charge a whole house dvr fee, if you only get a hopper by itself?

Unfortunately, I don't see that changing. D* is charging the same $10 for ALL of their DVRs now with the "Advanced Receiver Fee" (actually $20 before promos) even if it's a single two-tuner DVR. My local comcast is $17 for the first DVR.

Well Scott said what I have been thinking and why I made a sarcastic post recently, I just had no way of proving it. Some of the posts had to be from people who had a interest in making the Hopper look bad rather than just talking about what could have been done better. I even got an email from a poster who thought the same thing, so I'm betting others had a an idea about it also.

That said, great post Scott. I have been with you since the inception of this forum, yes you have been accused of being a Fan Boy, but as long as I can remember you do speak up when you see something you don't agree with. I happen to disagree the first Joey has to be free, not that it wouldn't be great, but more is that something Dish can do with the pricing structure in place, lose $7 a month for every subscriber who has a second TV. Why wouldn't they let those of us who are not getting the hopper get the same deal then? Not to mention, doesn't dish have to pay a fee to the channels for a second TV being viewed? Either way if they do or don't, taking your point and expanding on it, could the acquisition fee be raised from $99 which is pretty reasonable to $199 and then you would get the Hopper, with one Joey included? That would equal just over two years of contract with Dish if you were paying the $7 for the first Joey, so dish would be getting the same money, but the user then comes out ahead after the the two+ years every month, providing an incentive to stay. Sort of a lifetime exemption as long as you keep your account. Maybe some reasonable level of programming would be required......

Scott the problem with the Hooper/Joey combo is that Joey has no bulid in turner and that is a real problem. I can see an ad from direct tv showing the hooper family. Mr hopper is recording a show and watching a live tv broadcast. Junior is watching his show while wife and daughter can not watch what they want as all three turners are tied up. Their is a big fight happing and the family turns into fighting kangraoos. We then hear the wife yell out I want a divorce. Direct tv annoncer comes on and says save your marriage with direct tv whole home solution. Our main reciver has 5 turners plus get for free five additional reciver with their own turner unlike our competion. Direct tv has the best mvr solution today.

Why did dish not include turners in their Joey box?

Dish wouldn't be losing $7 a month for my 2nd TV off of my 722, that's currently included. Instead, they would be gaining $4 per month from me for the whole home fee, and more importantly I would think from Dish's perspective, most likely locking me into a 24-month contract....

BINGO!

Add to that...I would be more apt to increase to 3 TVs given that price point, thus getting even more revenue from me.

Scott's thoughts on the hopper are very similar to mine. I think that the first joey included in the hopper setup ,would of gone a long way in getting positive buzz for DISH. :) After all how can you charge a whole house dvr fee, if you only get a hopper by itself? I never understood why the 922 had an extra $4.00 sling fee included with the dvr fee either. As for the vip thing, yes, I see why you would want to include at least one vip receiver for tailgating . Otherwise the new tailgating antenna they came out with is not going to sell very well. Who wants a separate account for limited viewing on the tailgater? I like the entire idea of the hopper /joey system but to pay more than I pay now monthly in fees, is a non starter for me. Also I need and WANT the ota tuner . It's essential for me to get the sub channels I like to watch in my area. If DISH would make those two changes - I would gladly pay to upgrade as soon as I could get the $100.00 up. If no changes I will stay with what I have.

I presently have a 722k and two 211ks with dvr software. So I have 4 sat tuners and 4 ota tuners between them. I can record all the shows I like on all 4 networks each night and I miss nothing on Cw either. I have ota for my sub channels and local news as well. I also can watch in hd on the second google revue unit in the bedroom my 722k using the sling player and a sling pro hd box I hooked up to my 722k. Other than the channel logos and video art on the movies and shows, I will be missing nothing I didn't already have, when I had the 922 for 10 months in 2010. And that includes the entire range of software bugs & glitches, that will come with any new DISH receiver, I've ever had in my 15 years with them.;)

That would be obvious because the Hopper has whole house capabilities, kinda like the Sling on the 922.;)

I think they should break new ground and NOT charge the monthly fees for OWNED Joeys - since they don't even have a tuner.

Directv won't do that because they are moving toward the same solutuion. I would be shocked if Directv does not start charging an up front fee for additional sat receivers once the RVU boxes come out.

after our local cable compony started offering a whole house dvr soultion as well as direct tv I have been wondering when dish will. I must say from what I have seen so far I'm impressed with it. I can't say I will upgrade right away but I'm definitely considering it at some point. my main reason is I may be moving befor hoper joey is aviable. the 2tb hd is good plus I can still use my sling adapter on it. I just need to get a ehd to keep my 722k recodings on the 2 I have. dish has been good to me as a customer and look foward to getting this
