Someone explain DISH's thought process to me

So today I read all about the new Hopper system and decided to contact the DIRT team after seeing everyone getting the system for the new sub price of $99. I would be replacing a 722 and 211k with DVR. I've been a customer on Auto-Pay and paperless billing since I started in 2007. Started with the all-HD package that was ended about a year ago and am now on the AT200 with HBO, Starz, Multi-Sport packages, and the protection plan.

The response I get from DIRT? $415.

Why would I upgrade for that price? Why wouldn't I just cancel and re-sign up under my wife's name and then enjoy all of the new customer benefits? Then I can also cancel my 3 disc out at a time Blockbuster plan that I've had since they started their mail program.

Can someone explain why DISH decides to treat existing customers like this?

Wait, are you still under contract? I want the Hopper, too. Have a 722k and 211k but I'm barley in the first year of my contract with Dish.

Have you looked into Directv? :D

$415 looks wrong to me. I think a 1H/2J upgrade for a good customer should cost you more like $115. What final system is that quote for?

welcome to the "you are ineligible but we won't tell you WHY" club, it's pretty infuriating

It's ridiculous. I'm just going to cancel my account and re-sign, costing Dish a helluva lot more money.

I'm out of contract.

It's for the 1H/2J system.

seems like they are randomly picking who get's what price, I think I seen the MSRP for the Hopper receiver is $445 who do they think will pay $415 to lease

I feel your pain. It irritates me more than no one will tell me WHY i'm ineligible.
And you can't cancel and resign without a >6 months break :(

That is really weird. Because I've only been with Dish for about 2-3 years? Started with a 722k. About a year later, got the 922. I've had that for roughly a year, and now I got the 1h/2j for $99 deal. So a 3 year customer, second upgrade during that time, and I'm not even on paperless or autopay.

Wonder if they use credit scores or something? Good credit is about the only thing I've got anymore. Sure don't have any money - that's why everything goes on credit. lol

I wouldn't worry too much, yesterday was just the first day of sales. I can tell you that DISH has been watching closely and learning from your comments. It would not surprise me after the inital rush is done to see DISH tweek some of its offers to be favorable to more people.

Just keep an eye on SatelliteGuys and you will know when this happens. :)

It would be helpful if they would share some of this information, but from my standpoint it can't be a credit issue. We have over $100,000 in unused credit lines, and my credit score is fantastic. If I was declined due to a credit score, DISH would be obligated to provide me with a letter saying such and an opportunity to receive my credit report.

For the OP - I finally reached a supervisor who was willing to help me. Have you accepted credits (for service interruption, etc) in the past? Those make you ineligible..... page 13 -- http://www.satelliteguys.us/hopper-zone/279732-how-much-hopper-upgrade-costing-you-13.html (i dont know how to link a post)
Well, that's not a way to do business. I received a credit for an installer who didn't show up 3 years ago and last summer for spending over 2 hours on the phone trying to get a new 211 activated on the account. How can credits for their screw-ups make me ineligible for an upgrade?

By the time that happens I'll most likely be a "new customer", costing DISH hundreds of dollars more than if they had offered me the proper upgrade price initially.

Remember that trying to cancel and sign up under your wife's name is considered fraud. Not saying it doesn't happen but that's what dish considers it. If you did it you would need a different name, address, phone number, social security number, birth date and credit card number. A lot of people's credit cards are tied to each other so that may not work.

I definitely wouldn't do it personally, but it doesn't seem any more underhanded than offering people "credits" to be held against them at a later date

My wife has everything in your list different from me, except fot the address. And that couldn't be different if you want service at the same address. My wife is a different person than me and if she wants to continue service for a product after I no longer want it, that's her business. ;) Dish might not allow it. But that certainly isn't fraud. It's not illegal and nobody in their right mind is going to prosecute anyone over that.
