My Joey Screen turned purple and I lost sound? Any idea?

was playing around with lots of settings on my new Joey with a 47" LG TV. Being very careful to look at the effect of each one as I did it. Then, after about an hour of this, I turned off my Joey and then back on and my screen had a purple hue all over and no sound! Menus, shows, the guide, everything. I couldn't for the life of me figure out what was going on. I had to set my Joey back to all the defaults to clear it.

Any idea what could have happened? Or anyone seen anything like this yet?

Thanks rdinkel, that was actually the very first thing I checked and thought of. But I never touched the cable when I turned the Joey off (from the remote).

This actually would happen to me every once in a while on my 60" when I had the 722k. For the first time this happened on my 42" with the Joey. I never lost sound though. I think it has something to do with when the TV tries to acquire the HDMI signal and one of the colors does not get sent. It's a very simple fix, just turn off/on TV or change TV video mode to DVD player or something else then back to Sat again and it'll be fine until it decides to do it again another time you turn on your TV.

Thanks Jay. I actually thought of that, too. I didn't bounce my TV but did change input from a couple things and back to the HDMI cable. I will keep bouncing the TV in mind if it happens again. When I reset the Joey settings and it fixed the problem, I really didn't think the TV was in the equation any more. What do you think?

When you reset the Joey settings your TV video mode must have reset as well at some point when the Joey rebooted so it grabbed the HDMI signal all over again getting it right that time. It's like rebooting the HDMI signal which is basically what happens when you change your TV's video mode to something else or TV off/on. When it happened on my 42" I was surprised because it never did it with the vip211 so I just simply shut the TV off and turned it on again.

Did you try to do a hard reset before resetting back to factory? Resetting back to factory may have been overkill.

Thanks. I will do that if it happens again. I assume there is a reset button somewhere. I haven't inspected it thoroughly yet.

I had the same thing on my joey (purple, no sound). I unplugged the HDMI from both ends, shut tv & Joey off, then reset/reconnected it all & it worked. NOW however, I'm having PINK/RED hue & no sound at my hopper. Tried the front panel reset & unplugging cables w no luck. Pulling the cord for 10-sec seems to work, but then it does it AGAIN 30-60 min later. Seems like it's after I shut off the both the TV & Hopper. Haven't tried to do a factor reset yet (need to write down all my timers first). Any thoughts? I know the system is still really new & we're all kinda learning from scratch plus fighting god knows how many bugs...

My hopper seems to wake-up to a pink / purple tint to the screen after being off for a few hours. I have found that I can go into Setup and change the HD format to 720 and the after the screen flickers, it asks me if I want to accept the change, I reply "No" (keeping at 1080i) and the tint issue is cleared up. This has never happened with my previous 612. I tried to chat with the CS support rep and she insisted on this being a problem with my television and I should adjust the tint. I went round and round a few times, but eventually gave up. I really can't see how this can be a television issue since it only happens with the hopper and then only on initial turn on.

Resetting with the reset button in the front would take care of this for me, but the big issue was when things were recording and I didn't want to ruin the DVR recordings. So, I figured there would be another way. An easy way:

Go into your settings and go to the Display Settings and the HDTV settings and toggle between display modes (1080i to 720p) and back. This caused my box to get a new handoff with my TV and picture came back normal.

When you are using the HDMI connection, the Dish receiver talks to the TV and determines what resolution, frequency, and color space to use (auto-negotiation). Sometimes, when the auto-negotiation fails, the color space gets set wrong. For HDMI, the color space should be set to RGB Low for most TVs. When the color space gets set to YCbCr, it causes the screen to appear pink. (YCbCr color space is usually used for component connections).

As others have pointed out, doing something that causes the receiver and TV to do auto-negotiation again (like unplugging and re-plugging the HDMI cable, or turning your TV off and on again) usually fixes the problem.

I had this happen for the 1st time on my Hopper yesterday. I've seen once or twice in that last couple of years on my old 722, too. Turning the box off and on or the tv off and on fixes it. I do believe it's an HDMI conflict like posted above.

same thing happened to me on the Hopper. Turning off the TV didn't work. Had to click the reset button on Hopper box and then everything booted up nicely.

Happened under normal TV viewing.

Be really nice if a software patch could fix this. Never had it happen before the Hopper. Same equipment, same cables. Seems like a problem with the Hopper to me.

I had a very annoying handshake issue the other night. I was watching a recorded program with the audio coming from the TV. I decided the program deserved better sound, so I switched on the AVR, which the HDMI signal is passed thru when off, and the handshake caused the Hopper to freeze. The image froze on the recording I was watching, and I couldn't get it to play again.

I had to power everything off and on again. No reset was necessary, at least.

happened again today.

Not sure why it's happening now and didn't happen most of the first week.
