Discovery is redubbing its Planet Green network as Destination America and altering its programming focus beginning Memorial Day, May 28.The cabler, available in 59.5 million homes domestically, says it intends to focus on the "people, places and stories of the United States," targeting the adults 25-54 demo.
Planet Green launched in 2008 with an environmental bent -- a change from its previous format under the moniker Discovery Home.
"Discovery Communications continuously strives to break new ground with its unrivaled approach to storytelling that ignites viewers' curiosity," said Discovery Communications prexy-CEO David Zaslav. "We're proud to present the first network that showcases the essence of American innovation and hard work at its core."
Destination America senior veep of content strategy Marc Etkind said: "Our research, coupled with my own experience developing shows about America over the last 20 years, has shown that viewers have a huge appetite for content focused on our unique culture and spirit. By collecting the very best of travel, adventure, food, home and natural history into one brand, we're excited to create a new lifestyle destination for programming that Americans love."
Destination America has cooked up several food-themed shows for its original programming slate, all of which journey to different locales each episode, including reality competition show "BBQ Pitmasters" (premiering June 3 with a sneak preview May 30), global travel show "Fast Food Mania" (premiering June 3) and "United Sates of Food" (July 8).
Also on the docket are roller-coaster program "Super-Duper Thrill Rides" (June 16), gambling scheme series "Cheating Las Vegas" (July 14) and Old West exploration series "Ghost Town Gold" (August).
"Americans may be divided by politics, but we are united by our love of country," Destination America prexy and g.m. Henry Schleiff said. "As a network inclusive to all, Destination America will celebrate this connective spirit by curating the common ground among us: the pluck of the worn saddle, the promise of exploring new territory and the diversity that has made this nation great."

Planet Green lost its focus ages ago. No cable station actually is true to its theme anymore - let's see how long this lasts before they start showing Senior versus Junior on this new channel.

Totally agree. MTV for example.. What music?? Same for CMT,VH1

Or the SyFy channel showing... Wrestling! Frankly I'd prefer watching James T Kirk for the 1000th time, but that's just me. ;)

Gotta love how the entertainment industry is now too lazy to use English ("cabler".) Don't get me wrong, I'm all for inventing jargon where it serves a purpose, but this Variety-speak serves no purpose, other than making them look stupid. The worst I've ever seen has got to be "laffer", because "comedy" is obviously too many letters to type. (At least "skein" has one less letter than "series".)

we go from global cooling to global warming to climate change and planet green to destination america and what will it be called next.people have caught on to them lying to us so there changing the name of it again and again soon :D :)

So, what you are saying is we DON"T live on a green planet, because we are paving it over with parking lots? That's how they lied?

Little wonder they are re-branding it.I don't think anyone in my family ever watches planet green.

Agree. What we need is a classic scifi channel called SCI-FI CLASSIC.If I had the money I would launch a channel like this.On this channel they could show old tv series like. SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN, BUCK ROGERS ,STAR TREK, LOST IN SPACE, WONDER WOMAN , INCREDIBLE HULK , CLASSIC V. and many more...:)

I actually emailed the SYFY channel .Then it was called the scifi channel, a couple of years ago about coming out with a channel like this.

really dumb question..wasn't this the channel Discovery acquired from CBS that was a similar focus "CBS Eye on the people"? I think it became Discovery Civilization---Discovery Times Channel--Discovery Green--To destination america ..almost a full circle?..... nahh thats Discovery ID I think..this one was discovery health..(edited to correct)

Yeah once I saw the BBQ shows kind of thought the whole planet green model was moving on

I've made the joke before that when they changed their name, they removed the SCIence and FIction content and replaced it with SillY FantasY

...except that's no joke. :(
