Pretty much the only good thing for the Angels in 2012

With Williams' brilliant pitching on Tuesday and Weaver's gem last night this might just wake up the sleeping beast and get things going. Here's hoping. CONGRATS JERED!

Remember what I said about the Twins being a slump buster.

Pitching good against the Twins is not all that difficult. Now lets see if they can keep it up against other teams. Two of their next three series are against the Twins, so that should really help. The true test comes when they play the Rangers.

I think he was going to retire anyway at the end of the year.

I think he is done. He is the best closer ever, but next year, you have to do what is best for the team and I think if this kid Soriano does well as the closer(the guy I think they will now use), Mariano will have to...*gulp* compete for the closers job.

I disagree,
IF Mariano decides to and is able to come back, he WILL be the Closer, no questions asked.

Looking at the bright side, Aaron Cook's ERA of 20.25 is actually lower than that of nearly half a dozen other Red Sox pitchers after the first week of this season... or last season...

Meanwhile, rookie third basemen Will Millbrooks has demonstrated his suitabilty to be Youkilis's replacement by missing today's game with a hamstring injury. When I was his age, people didn't even have hamstrings. Or anterior cruciaties. Or groins.

I was just marveling at how the Angels batting statistics suck. They've got five position players hitting under .200, seven under .211 and nine iunder .220 and that includes three everyday players plus two more who have played in about 2/3's of their games. Those nine players have just eight home runs in 500 at bats.

And tonight, the .198 hitting Pujols is on the bench. Good thing he chose to play in a low pressure market where the fans aren't rabid like the fans in the northeast are.

They were still booing him.

Bizarre Red Sox/Orioles game in the 17th inning. Both teams are using position players to pitch. Orioles first basemen Chris Davis throws at 90 MPH with control, even though the announcers said he hadn't pitched since high school. Bizarre, because he struck out five times as a batter.

The Orioles made a highlight film relay of a ball hit off the left field wall to keep the game alive in the bottom of the 16th.

Oops. As I type this, McDonald just gave up a three run homer to the Orioles, but remember, the Red Sox get to face the Orioles first baseman again in their half of the inning.

I would have expected the Red Sox to instead have brought in tomorrow's starter, Doubront, because they had an off-day and so it is his normal day to pitch. When I've seen that done before, the major league club just brings up a triple A pitcher for one day to start the next game

Davis just said in the post game interview that he had pitched in college.

From ESPN.com

The last time two teams brought in position players to pitch in the same game was Oct. 4, 1925, when Hall of Famers Ty Cobb of Detroit and George Sisler of the St. Louis Browns closed out the second game of a doubleheader on the last day of the season, STATS LLC said.
