Dual Hopper Intergration (From Team Summit)

That soundss great John but your missing the big piece of the puzzle and that is dealing with the aspect of MoCA, some of the limits are based on the MoCA spec.

Of course MoCA 2 takes care of these issues, but we are still 2 or 3 years away from seeing any MoCA 2 boxes from anyone.

Don't see how. The required bandwidth to stream 6 "HD" streams around is ~1/4 of the available MoCA 1.0 spec.

If they officially supported MoCA and Ethernet they could use Ethernet for live streaming and MoCA as a "backhaul" data transfer between hoppers.

Building an active/active type database where each hopper updates the other isn't that complicated and it is very high reliability.

Ours have been up for quite some time (> 500 days) and just keep on trucking.

I will never use OTA because of PTAT. Sure I would gain my PBS and CW in HD but we don't watch those channels anyways. With PTAT I would think 1 OTA tuner would be fine for most people and if it isn't you can plug one into each hopper.

So pony up for a second Hopper so one can have a second OTA tuner? Now we're back to 622/722 territory. Their thinking is that only a small contingent uses OTA so why bother with additional, I guess. Hopefully, it won't disable a sat tuner like D*'s does. I'm a bit disappointed with what I'm hearing.

This is an excellent first step. I'm doing this now using an extra Joey (with a one button HDMI input switch) for my main TV. The access to both Hoppers is simple with no hassle. With this upgrade I'll be able to do the same from my second Hopper and then be able to drop one PTAT. It is not as simple as it could be, but I will be able to resolve timer conflicts by switching Hoppers from both locations. Scott's mention of the concern about all the recordings being in one place is interesting with all the complaints about too many recording icons now. It might be best to think of the different drop downs as folders - PTAT, Hopper 1, Hopper 1 EHD, Hopper 2, Hopper 2 EHD, etc..

Certainly some refinements like auto conflict resolution and others would be nice, but let's get step one now.

That's not what I meant at all. This is the dual hopper integration thread so I thought most people here would already have 2 hoppers. Of course you wouldn't buy another hopper just for an additional OTA tuner.

Fair enough. I was riffing off Digiblur's comment that it appeared we were going backward. 722k and 922 were dual tuner OTA and now we're talking about single tuner OTA again like with the older ViP receivers.

I've been holding off on a hopper because I want to be able to pause live programming on any tv and pick it upon any other tv. With this you can't pause live tv on 1 hopper and pick it up on the other?

Why wouldn't you be able to?

Because the hopper can't use the other hopper's tuners. You might be able to to that with DVR recordings but he asked about live tv.

When the integration is available I don't see why you couldn't. Pause the show on the hopper. Go to your other hopper, switch to the hopper with the paused show. Select that show and start watching where you left off. Right?

Maybe sometime down the line but Scott said they only demoed seeing the other hopper's recordings. He said tuners and timer lists were not integrated.

So are you saying that you can view the other hoppers tuners, or would you have to be recording the show?

Is the integration only between the hoppers or will you be able to access the hopper from a Joey that is linked to another hopper without having to link it like you have to now? Reason I ask is the joey's do not have the drop down box like the Hopper does.

Not buying this...MOCA 1.1 supports 175 megabits with 16 devices. Plenty of room to do the sharing and such.

A unified recording list could easily be done. One hopper would be the master hoppa and drive the show instructing the slave hoppa on what to record. The joeys would check each hopper seamlessly for a tuner when needed and the programming would be in one big list with a search option if needed.

Other issues include:

What if 1 hopper has space and the other has a hard drive full? Customers would get upset if they started to lose programs with free space.

If some episodes of a show go one one drive then the other? EHD transfer issues?

You lose one of the 2 hoppers?

What if one loses power but not the other. Then it is plugged back in, how do they figure out how to recover. (i.e. the one that was the master got unplugged, the slave decided it was the master then the master came back, which one is in charge)?

The list of issues can go on and on. The "best" solution would probably be a 6 tuner Hopper, of course you have a single point of failure, but much easier time of dealing with it.

I don't mind that at first, but in the future, it should have six tuners and assign as needed... With Joeys going where there is a free tuner. That is integration.

I am here with some DISH guys now, they have been reading your comments and they tell me that the integration will get better as time goes on. :)

And that's exactly what I want to hear. I'm glad they know what we want and they are working towards it.
