Had to drop down to ATHD120 just lately, then I thought I would get Encore A La Cart, well it went well till the other day, because I had Encore HD-340 then I lost it.When I called in today to complain DISH says you need ATHD250 or the Starz package for Encore HD-340.I told them I have the HD For Life commitment, they said sorry can't give it to you unless you change your package. The good part is because I called to complain DISH offered me the Encore package for $2.50 a month for 6 months which is about what it's worth because it's HDless.;)

so they gave it to you for 1/2 price then
(you can get the Encore pack for $5 a month)

and normally to get the HD version of a channel you must subscribe to the SD version (unless there is no SD counterpart as in the BB package)

Encore A La Carte only has the SD version of Encore East. The only way to get Encore East in HD is through AT250. The reason you had 340 HD for a bit was because it was in free preview.

Yeah, no idea why it's this way but it's been that way for quite a while now.

EDIT: Just looked it up, looks like you don't get Encore East at all with the Encore package. Just Encore West SD.

Yea that's what they said,oh well it's worth $2.50.;):D

Kinda of gives a different meaning when a subscriber is supposed to have HD For Life.

Of course we all know why..to entice you to upgrade for a HD channel your already supposed to have,oh well that's life.

i think its encore west..encore east(sd) is in starz

1. Dish charges its customers more for HD versions of channels.

2. Dish will not carry the Disney HD channels because Disney charges extra for those feeds. Dish says they won't pay twice for the same content to be delivered in HD.

Can anyone see the point I'm struggling to make?

Dish has the promo, HD Free for Life. How is this charging more? Honestly, I do get the point you are trying to make. Dish states they will pay a reasonable rate for channels and has the experience to know what they may be worth. That's fine, but they do tend to have more disputes than others. Some get resolved quickly while other tend to go on, while others don't seem to get resolved at all.

I know, you said you get it. But here's a summary;

Encore A La Carte only has the SD version of Encore East. The only way to get Encore East in HD is through AT250. The reason you had 340 HD for a bit was because it was in free preview.

LAME....they should give you the HD feed of Encore East if you sub to the package

Yes I forgot but it's hd only in at250

Yes, it is confusing. At times Encore is included in a free preview. Several time HD is included, but most times it is not. WAM was in the pack, don't believe it has been for a long while. I believe at one point one coast could get Encore E HD while rest of the country could not. I seem to recall posts claiming when the complained, Dish would give the Encore HD while others couldn't. It could be the contracts changed over the years and Dish was forced to make changes. The only solution I can offer is to get AT250, Starz and HD for Life (at least you know what you need to do to get this for free).

Also I dont see what HD for life has to do with getting a specific channel

If you drop from AT250 to 120 are you still entitled to those HD channels in 250 that you no longer pay for? no
So if Encore is in the AT250 pack only why would someone think it stays if you drop down in package?

Although i wish they were, Encore East SD/HD (340) and Encore Family (347) are not included in the $5 a la carte Encore Movie Pack. Channels 341-346 and 377 are included.

341 Encore West
342 Encore Westerns
343 Encore Action
344 Encore Suspense
345 Encore Drama
346 Encore Love
377 MoviePlex

340 Encore HD is included in Dish America Gold, America's Top 250, America's "Everything" Pak, and Starz.

340 Encore SD is only included in Starz.

347 Encore Family is included in America's Top 250 and America's "Everything" Pak.*

340 Encore HD, 341-347 Encore themed channels, and 377 MoviePlex are in America's Top 250.

344 Encore Suspense and 377 MoviePlex are included in Blockbuster @ Home along with 353 Starz Cinema, 378 IndiePlex HD, and 379 RetroPlex HD as well as other movie and variety channels ( along with one-disc at a time from Blockbuster).

I hope that helps.

*Note: Recently, I noticed that Encore Family was in free preview. Then, it went away. Then, it came back when OWN, GSN, and The Hub were added to the Heartland Package. I am not sure if it was added to Encore Movie Pack, Heartland package, Starz, or is just in free preview again. I like that it is back since the Encore channels are uncut and commercial-free. I wish Dish would add the rest that are available in HD, and I wish Starz would add the remaining SD Encores in HD.

Because your first point is not really true, I can't agree. On paper they charge $10, in reality no one should be paying that. So to your point, if on paper Disney wants to charge extra for HD, but in reality does not, then it's the same.
If Dish really did charge for HD, I'd understand more your point.

I think Iceberg mentioned it, but maybe you misunderstood HD for life. The channel has to be in the package you subscribe to to get it in HD. If you drop down a package you don't keep the HD channel.

I also think what is adding to the confusion is that the Encore channels happened to be in free preview. This happens a lot I notice. Dish is being nice by giving a perk like a free preview. Then, subs get upset when it goes away and thought it was part of their package. So, channel 103 shows the free previews for those wondering.
