Install Issues - Need Advice

I don't know how they would identify a C31 on an order, but since it's not an hd receiver, there must be a different designation.

How come you're going that way? We told you your original way with the SWM16 and H25's could be done, the installer just either didn't know how to or didn't want to do it.

I don't know if it matters to you (or if you had even considered it) but if you go the C31 route, those are at the mercy of your recording timers. If you ever get into a situation where there are three or more recordings going on simultaneously on the HR34, then one or more of C31 TVs hooked up to it loses a tuner (I believe the local TV takes priority). Similar to what happens when a recording goes off on a VIP772, the TV output for that tuner is forced to watch the recording.. If only 2 or 3 TVs will ever be in use at once, or you are meticulous about your scheduling, then it doesn't matter.. But if all four TVs get used and you become a serial timeshifter/DVR addict like most of us who have multiple DVRs, then you might be asking for trouble with the C31s..

I thought he was just going to get ONE C31 instead of a 9th tuner (H25).

Going C31 for 3 reasons.

1. I am no longer in a hurry because Dish and BTN have quit their corporate bs.

2. I will have a HR24 in addition to my HR34 which will give me 2 additional tuners which will help avoid any conflicts.

3. Wife hates the fact that I was going from 6 tvs to 2 tvs with the ability to pause and rewind live tv (current Dish setup I am running 3 VIP722s). By me waiting and replacing at least one of the H25s with a C31, I make her more happy. A happy wife is a happy life!

Bottom line. The issue with the install may give the ability to swap a H25 with a C31 especially since the installer still tells me (called his cell) that he can't install the SWM16 outside. He is still limiting his install capabilities to 8 tuners. I did send him a link to this conversation to spark some additional thoughts :). So I plan to push my install after 10/5 when the C31s will be available in my market area. I plan to deal with any equipment order abnormalities during the install ( unless someone advises me differently).

Gotcha. As long as you can make it work and it keeps her happy then its a good setup. :)

I still say the installer is being lazy though because there is no reason for him to have refused to put the SWM16 out by the dish. And I hope he reads this.

I think that's a little premature. You never know what requirements a technician is subject to. I think a good question for the technician would be "WHY can't you install the switch at the dish?"

I can't think of any reason why a tech would be prohibited from installing this particular weatherproof switch outside (when they've been mounting switches on the sides of houses/backs of dishes for years), and Liquidforce has already verified that it's not a Directv mandate. Either he don't want to do it or he's ill-trained.

Or Liquidforce may not be an official spokesman for DirecTV corporate field policies. My experience is that each office will have their own particular policies and rules and enforcement methods, even those offices which are corporate in nature. Much more so when dealing with subcontracting outfits, HSPs, retailers, etc.

I'm biased though. I'm a technician. ;)

Sub contractors still have to go by D* rules.

Liquidforce never said he was a spokesperson for D*, just a helpful person that does the job.

1. Work it less work to run 1 cable to central location and then install the swtich and from there run all the wires to there rooms.
2. Amount of cabling used
3. At one point we had customers check connections on the switch which would be hard if it one the roof .
4. appearances it your installing a swim 16 by the dish that alot of cabling coming down and has to go some where.

But at the same time customer has to feel that they are right.

Yeah but that's a SWM8 LNB.. We're talking about mounting the SWM16 at the dish so that the OP can use the two existing lines that go into his existing Dish dish. To do it that way would require less cable than mounting the SWM16 inside and running the four lines from the dish to it. You can still use the 8 way splitters from each SWM trunk at the central location.

Scheduled install today to switch from Dish. Issue with install was location of dish and volume of feeds from dish to house wasn't adequate based on equipment requested. I currently have ONLY 2 RG6 feeds from DISH to the house and ordered the following Directv equipment:

1. HR34 (5 tuners)
2. HR24 (2 tuners)
3. H25 (1 tuner)
4. H25 (1 tuner)

Where the dish is located is the ONLY spot where the installer can have it for clear line of sight, distance, and grounding needs (need to go to power source). Problem - can't run any more lines from Dish to house because of a 900 sq. ft. concrete patio in the way. As a result, I am limited to only using the SWM8 (not sure if I am saying this correctly). Basically he can only use one feed coming into the house enabling up to 8 tuners.

What equipment would you get with this limitation? Driving factors for me are ability to pause live TV in most rooms, avoid recording conflicts, access recordings from any HD box, limit up front fees as much as possible, ability to watch 4 different TVs at once.

Options I see:
1. Forget about Directv and live with DISH (BTN the kicker here)
2. HR34 (5 tuners), H25 (3 tuners)...problem not able to pause live TV except for one TV.
3. HR24, HR24, HR24, HR24 (ability to pause live TV, record up to 4 shows at once and still watch TV on 4 different TVs...problem is the upfront fees..I would have to fork over another $300 from my previous configuration. Any other benefits I am missing if I don't get the HR34 (HMC)?
4. HR34, HR24, C31, C31 - is this feasible with only 8 tuners available? Also, I would have to wait until after 10/5 when they start to ship these to Illinois
5. What other options???

Appreciate your thoughts!!
Assuming your dish will be pole mounted, why is the patio in the way? Can the cables be buried AROUND the patio?

No way around it except to run cables over concrete. This solution not acceptable by my wife and the picky neighbors.
