setting up a new receiver in a remote location??

So my question is this: My dad just switched to Direct TV in his home. I believe his set-up consists of 1 hdDVR box and 3 other regular HD boxes. His intentions were to use one of the regular boxes at his cabin about 40 miles away. You know the typical get another antenna, hook it up to a dedicated receiver and your good to go. Similar to what people do in RV's all the time. Well the issue is he cant get it to work-The dish is dead on in the right direction the connection is solid,the antenna is the exact same as the one he uses at the house. The receiver is legit that is registered to his account, so we're at a loss as to why we cant get it going.

In doing some research I've read the newer boxes that have came out in the past year or so are different than the old style and are more difficult to set-up outside of your home network. Apparently they are somehow linked in your home network...I don't know. I do know the older ones were simple as can be to set-up anywhere you wanted as long as you had an account and the equipment.

Does anyone have any idea what needs to be done to get these newer receivers set-up somewhere other than in your home network??

There could be many things wrong that are preventing it from working. Is the mast plumb? Is the dish the same as the one at home, including the lnb? Are there any trees or other objects that could be interfering? If the setup at home is a swm type, are you using a power inserter? Are the cables all good? Are you getting any signal strength numbers at all? Lots of questions!

The question is what receivers he is trying to use at the remote location and the type of DirecTV antenna he is trying to use. If the receivers he wishes to use at the remote location are H25 receivers then he MUST use a SWM LNBF. You can't not get a signal on the H25 receivers using anything other than a Slimline Dish with a SWM LNBF or you might be able to get a Phase Three Dish and replace the LNBF with a 3 orbital slot SWM LNBF.

I agree with you. The problem is we here are not likely able to provide a solution without more details from the OP, as to his installation. I just thought I would add another possibility to your initial post.

The forty miles will produce a very minor change in az & el but could move you out of the spot beam than controls local channels.

+ the sat locations are in true degrees and there is a deviation to be added to the magnetic results you use with a compass. Set el & tilt....swing through a wider arc with a plumb mast....then repeat with the el.....might get a surprise. Reset the box for the dish being used. Observe what has been mentioned above about compatibility of the receiver, dish type and LNB. Recheck fittings.
