Lost signal, Dish wants $100 to look, my contract ends this week, unsure what to do...

wait! you guys are saying that if the Dish equipment i lease from Dish is acting up, i have to pay for them to come look at it/ Fix it? WTH?

its not my equip. why would i pay to fix it? if i was with the crappy cable company and my box failed or i had bad connection i would not pay them to fix it.

How can a company "not" sell equip (they lease it) and then charge for a protection plan on equip they own?

i have been getting random sugnal dropout for a sec or 2 at a time and was planning to call Dish for service, and now i read this.....?????

Yep it's true and I don't agree with it either but,just had Charter cable internet installed last week and they also have a protection plan,I haven't read the fine print but I would have to assume it would work very similar to Dish's.Seems to be the trend with most internet,cable,phone,and sat comps. these days.
 
The equipment being leased just means you do not have to purchase anything if the equipment goes bad. The equipment is replaced for free but you will pay a tech visit fee.

well that sucks. I know my local Comcast doesnt charge for service calls as of earlier this year anyway.

i have no contract right now,it doesnt make sense to stay with dish when Direct is offering so much, i had Direct years ago,guess the hop every 2 years might be worth it.

on a technical note: anyone know why my signal stays above 50 (usually 55 on cloudy days and 60+ on clear days) yet i keep getting short lost signal blips? i did the analysis and check switch and everything looks good/steady.
 
In dealing with cabelcos for my mom. They will fix, repair or replace any of their equipment/wiring for no charge. Now if there is a problem with your equipment or wiring, then you pay a service charge, unless you have their protection plan.

well i guess that is how it should be, and since everything related to my Dish network is "theirs" other than my Tv itself ,Dish should pay for it.

i didnt install the wiring,the dish , or the box, i simply leased equipment and had them install it,i know its like beating a dead horse,but if they accept faulty equipment as their own and will replace it for free, then the service call should be on their dime too.

if it wasnt for wanting to see live sports, i would have zero reason for cable/sat.

oh well, no one is forcing me to subscribe.

I had this same problem last month. I had installed a 1000.2 Eastern arc dish myself (I own all my equipment) in July, and the lnb went bad inside of two months! Luckily I had bought it from a Dish retailer on Ebay, and he swapped it out through warranty exchange. Just go to the info screen, and it'll tell you "lnb drift detected" and the value of the drift if it's the same as mine was.

Have a 722 for ~4-5+ years now (out of contract); but I've been 'stupid' and paying the $7/mo fee (as it seems like I need a replacment once a year anyway). So I started geting pretty sever dropouts a couple of weeks ago. Finally called & sent tech out; he peaked the dish, got 70's at the dish, got 70's at the junction in my house; but 20's once we went the last 20' to the box. he tried several fixes, none worked, so he suggested move the dish closer (thinkning the ~120' run was to long, altho it's been working fine for 5+years). So Today I moved my dish closer, called to get a re-peak, and again 70's at the dish, 20-50 on the box. This tech said I bet it's the box. So he swapped it out with a 722K he had on the truck, and guess what, 70's+ finally!
So it may be the box???

Did he ever try to swap out the diplexer on the back of the receiver?

Just to clear this up DISH owns the set top box and the LNBF. Everything else on the install belongs to you.

Guess you didn't actually read the contract? Btw same for Direct TV.
This has been discussed so many times I won't list everything, but to start, Dish is quite some less than most people will pay with Cable, you ARE paying for Cable to come out, you just don't know it, it's built into the cost of your prgramming. You pay with them even if you never call.
Dish has a service plan, you only have to start it before calling, keep it for awhile then drop it. That will make the cost around $15 I think for a service call.
For the future, when you see some service is free, stop and think is it really?
 
We lease vehicles. They break we pay to fix them. Unless we pay for the Maintenance Plan.
 
I tried to sum it up in the title. Here is my issue in short bullet points:

*Been losing signal for a few seconds at a time for about a week
*Last 2 days, signal getting worse, almost unwatchable
*Yesterday, reset the receiver (VIP 622) and now no signal at all
*checked all my cables, looks good and tight
*Sat looks fine, no blockage, and has not moved
*called Dish. They wanted to send a technician to investigate for $100.

My contract ends this week, so I inquired about renewing my contract since I've been satisfied with my service thus far. They still want to charge me to have someone come look at it AND they were unwilling to negotiate on the price of service or the Hopper upgrade even though I was willing to do a new 2 year contract. Is this normal? So now I have NO TV service and I'd have to pay to have it fixed while still using my receiver that is 6 years old. Meanwhile, I could jump to DirecTV and get the latest technology and free installation along with new subcriber discounts.

What would you do? Am I missing something? Was hoping for some insight, but this seems like a no brainer.

Another kicker is they charge you to send their boxes back to them, when you cancel service. I think it is $15 per box. Put a real bad taste in my mouth for ever coming back to Dish.
 
Why is it, if Dish discovers your signal problem, they call and come out for FREE. But if you discover a problem they want $100 to come out and fix it.

Depends upon the lease. We have no complaints on costs.

Wondered the same thing. We have had loss of signal for a while. Knew it would cost so didn't push the issue (at home). Got a call a week ago for my father, he wasn't home. They said the would call back.

Couple days later they got a hold of mom and set up an appt for Monday afternoon. Just had to wait a while for them to notice the problem.
