When my wife watches the CW it says the show is in HD,but is not. Am I missing something? Is it just not in my neck of the woods?

I noticed that happens for the Pittsburgh CW. I live in Altoona, PA but Pittsburgh is the closes CW station. It went HD like a month or 2 ago (for Johnstown/Altoona area, Pittsburgh had it for a while now) but not all shows with the HD icon in the guide show in HD. Must be a CW thing.

It may be in hd, but you could be tuned to the sd feed.

like in erie, on our ABC channel its say like Entertainment tonight is in HD when is not and is doesn't show the HD icon when our CW is HD same as CBS, so believed that HD icon

Thanks for the info guys. i didnt know how it worked. I hope we get Hd on CW soon.

that has to do with whether or not the affiliate showing it has HD recording capability for syndicated shows.

The program may be recorded in HD but if your affiliate can't grab the feed and play it back in HD you get SD. Our local CW is like that. The only programming in HD is the CW network programs. Everything else is black barred even though commercials say "in HD"

In the case of the original poster, his local CW is only offered in SD

it might be able to be done but there are some limitations due to the situation in your city
CW is a subchannel off of CBS. CW is now in HD but CBS broadcasts in 1080i. It is hard to put a 1080i and a 720p subchannel in the same bandwidth
Can it be done? yes
Will it hinder the CBS picture? yes

I just learned that few months ago. Our local CBS affiliate (WTAJ) turned in HD for syndicated programs. They did that before covering the news in HD. I just always assumed you had your locals HD all the shows should be as well.

The Greensboro/Triad ABC and My Network (WXLV and WMYV, both owned by Sinclair) always show "HD" in the guide, but both rarely actually are. The ABC Network stuff is HD most of the time, but nothing syndicated. WMYV was added in HD a while ago but only airs 10 hours of HD "My" stuff per week. WASTE of bandwidth... That's a station issue, but not Directv. Ice covered your situation, though. On the other hand, WUVC and WGPX also never show HD in the guide, but usually are. Due to ACC Network stuff, our locals move regular CBS or Fox programming around, moving live CBS/FOX games to subchannels and those show "HD" in the guide, but aren't actually in HD.

Same for Reno 46. Arrow labeled HD but not. OTA CW HD is carried on 27-2 but AM21 will not tune that.

That's a shame- my tivo (I pay $10 a month for ota service) gets 27.2, the HD feed just fine. Too bad that you can't manually configure the am21 to record it (since it probably says something like "regular programming" in the channel guide instead of the program names that are on the sd feeds. "Supernatural" is very hard to watch in SD blurra-vison as most of the good actions scenes are darkly lit and it is hard to see what is going on. I suggest subscribing to Hulu+ if you want to see it in high def, I think it is only $7 a month.

Only the HR34/Genie can "scan" on the AM21 for channels not in the DIrectv database. Otherwise you're limited to what is in there

In the Reno, NV area, there are ota that claim to be broadcasting in HD, but they are not. The am21/genie combo shows them as sd.
There is a channel that broadcasts in HD, I think it is 46.1. I get this on my ota tuner off my tivo. Looks great, nice HD.
However, on the am21/genie combo, the program guide doesn't list any programs (my tivo does though), it simply shows "regular programing" for every time slot. You can watch a program off it live in HD (yup, you can watch CW in HD with it), you can't record anything (even pushing the record button does nothing).

An AM21 is a separate Directv receiver that connects to your main receiver via USB. It has an antenna input and will add OTA channels to your Directv guide. Most receivers will only see what is in the Directv locals database, which hasn't been updated in a long time. Thus, it is missing some subchannels in many markets. If you have an HR34 receiver, it will add all local channels to the guide by actually scanning via the antenna, but only have guide data for those in the database.
