Isn't Directv's Advanced TV fee going up $5?

Appears to be going up $2 from $8 to $10, but was already increased this year earlier. They also clearly show there might be a $2 additional RSN fee which would suggest that will become more widespread.

Every year I keep thinking that the price increases will finally cause mass defections from pay TV. The defection rate has picked up some in the last couple of years, but it is still pretty small.

As long as sports rules the roost, people will keep paying. As more and more sports are pulled from OTA affiliates to the cable networks, people have no choice if they want to watch sporting event.

29 of the top 30 viewed events on tv this year were NFL games. Until people stop viewing sports in mass and the media conglomerates stop bundling everything together, it wont stop.

You can look at this another way. More general entertainment looking people might have cut the cord.....now leaving sports to get top spots. As you mention people who love sports will pay no matter what...so basically sports will rule in rankings.

The number of avid sports fans is probably not sufficient to support the current business model if the non sports fans start cutting the cord en mass. As you mentioned the popularity of the NFL. At least most of the football games tend to be OTA.

I'm currently out of contract. Would there be any incentive to renew my contract for 2 years before these changes go into effect? Would I be eligible for any credits? I currently have the 722k + Slingbox and its a perfect setup. Is there any point in looking to upgrade receivers?

There is no such thing as renewal unless you upgrade equipment, that triggers a new 2 year committment.

You are out of a committment not a contract, you can get out of the committment with a $17.50/month remaining penalty.

A contract implies obligations on both sides, with satellite service, all the provider has to do is to supply you a signal, channels are not guaranteed, little is guaranteed, but you must pay your bill for 2 years or pay the early termination penalty.

After your committment period expires you are on a month by month basis which is not a bad thing but gets you no perks except being able to terminate service at will, all Dish has to do is continue their service (no change) as long as you wish and you pay.

I am not sure this counts as "official word but I was told in chat and by phone that as an AEP customer I will see a $15 increase but a $10 credit for 18 months meaning a net increase (18 months) of 45.00. Not great but bearavble till the credits run out.

That's what it says on the paperwork Scott had posted as well.

I just don't understand why AEP is increasing by so much if nothing new is being added. It used to be a good deal. It hasn't been a deal for several years now. The premium movie channels haven't increased by $15 so it doesn't make sense.

Once the smoke settles existing dish customers & most new customers including those activated after 1/16 won't see full price on AEP for some time. Even then it will still be a tad cheaper than directv's premiere.
