A friend of mine received a call from "dish" saying that cause hes such a loyal customer, they will give him 6 months of free service if he pays for the first 6 months upfront. They also said that he needs to call them back (gave him a #), and that the payment must be made with a "green dot card" from walmart. I told him to call dish (1800333 dish) and take them up on their offer. Im assuming this is a scam, right? Not sure what account info access they have for him, but he didnt give up any info. He also gave "dish" my number saying that i would also be interested in the deal.

YES IT IS A SCAM. DO NOT DO IT.

Hint: Most anything involving "Green Dot" or "Western Union" is almost 100% guaranteed to be a scam.

Yes it's a scam there's no way dish would give a half a year service free. Sounds too good to be true.

Geesh... that particular scam job is phoning it in. A green dot card from Walmart? What, non-consecutive unmarked bills delivered in a briefcase a bit too suspicious?

The best deal used to be an annual lump sum payment for your year's subscription that added up to a free month. But that has been gone for nearly a decade.
??? I'm still doing this, just paid for yearly Top 250. The nice thing is I pay just before the (typically) annual price increase. Am I just grandfathered into the deal?

It's not worth it anymore unless all you have is AT250.

The annual discounts on the premium channels are worse than when you bundle them all together.

Too bad that they don't offer an explanation of how the scammers get access to their accounts, or what they intend to do about it.

Most companies sell mailing lists. Since there are so many companies involved, it is hard to say where the information came from. This is why you should always opt out of the "advertising partner" stuff in your privacy preferences. The bigger question is why, industry wide, these lists are opt-out instead of opt-in.
