Max Number of Events for Timers?

I have Doctor Who scheduled to record new episodes on my Hopper, and I've noticed that tonight's episode is scheduled to record, but next Saturday's isn't on the Daily Schedule.

I also have Orphan Black, which is on right after Doctor Who tonight and next Saturday, and both are scheduled to record.

I did notice that BBC America has lots of Doctor Who repeats scheduled between now and then that the Hopper is skipping, but there are only a few showings of Orphan Black.

Is there a maximum number of skipped events (or a maximum number of recorded + skipped events) on the Hopper? If so, will the Hopper automatically correct itself and schedule next Saturday's Doctor Who to record whenever it will fit under the limit? I have tried rebooting the Hopper, but it did not affect the Daily Schedule.

Yes there is a max # of events. 500 something. As it progresses through the week, skipped events (which do count in the limit) will fall off and the new recordings will be picked up. No worries!

We know the maximum timers is 96 and events in the 500's. The max timers can be exceeded by remote access but then you cannot add others until it is below 96, at least on the 722--not a good idea.

The number of all events is shown on DVR + My Recordings + Daily Schedule. It is desirable to pick timer selections that generate fewer event like weekly, single-channel, full/exact name, etc..

The event limit is subtle in that you will silently exceed it.

I'm uncertain if you exceed the limit that they will be added later or ever. There are times when timers lose their events and do not record that timer ever. If possible check the schedule and look for missing timers. That may be easier than checking each timer looking for zero events--it would be nice to have the number of events for each timer in the timers list, but....

96 / 576

Make sure to unhide skipped events for an accurate count.

In this day and age with enormous RAM sizes, why oh why are these limits so dinky?

And while I'm venting, is there still a 999 event limit to the internal and EHD?

Hmm, according to the Daily Schedule there's only 88 events after I unhide skipped events. There's a total of 19 timers, so it's not the timers.

I did check this morning (after BBC America had several Doctor Who repeats on in the early morning hours of today and yesterday's marathon over) and it now extends throughout the week. I'm guessing the Daily Schedule updates with the nightly reboot (or whenever the Hopper is rebooted?) unless a new recording is added, since it still didn't show Saturday's recording after last night's new episode had aired and the marathon was over.

It does amaze me that in this day and age there is still a limit like the 96 timers / 576 events, though.

Im anal about timers :)

Every Friday or Saturday I get on there and manually go thru the guide and set a 1 time recording, then go back thru the daily schedule and make sure they all took. So i never see that limit. Like I said, Im anal...

Check your Dr. Who timer...I've seen individual timers also hit an event limit (I think it's around 48)...I'll bet you're around that number. As more past events drop off newer events for that timer will fill in.

LOL, I have an anal issue too! Every Saturday morning I print a weeks schedule (Sunday thru Saturday) 6 to 10pm CST from our favorites channel list I have made in the TitanTV.com site. On each page at the top I write the date and day for that day's schedule so I can see it quicker than reading the small print. Then I go thru each day and circle all our favorite “New” programs only, no “Repeats”. Then I bump the list against the prior weeks schedule list that I still have to make sure I didn’t miss a program. Then I go to one of our Hoppers and go thru the daily schedules and check, add, correct the schedule as required. Then I go to a second Hopper and do the same exact thing. This serves as a backup in case one of the Hoppers fails or a program that didn’t record correctly, didn’t record for some reason, etc. Every morning I go thru and check both Hoppers for that days schedule with my printed list to make sure it is still correct. I have done this procedure for about eight years now. The cable company we were with had horrible DVRs so this is what I had to do so we wouldn't miss any programs we like. Dish TVs DVRs has not been near as bad as the cable companies DVRs were but things still happen occasionally. Keep the Mrs happy!

On a third Hopper I have series timers set for all our favorite sports programs. When I had 722s I tried to combine our favorite sports and regular programs on one DVR but the 96 timer and 576 event limits drove me crazy. I do not like to delete timers when a program’s season is over so it is ready to go for the next season. I don’t prefer to delete a timer until I know the program is never ever going to be on again. Having the sports timers on a third Hopper has been a big help so far. I use to have to always delete timers I did not want to delete.

I did not know about the 999 event limit for both hard drives. Did you see this pop up on the 722s?

No, I have not personally hit the limit, but many others have on their VIP DVRs. I think the Hopper 2000 also had this problem at introduction. If that has been relaxed on the internal, then that's great.

OK, thanks. the most I have is 245 on one of my EHD. I don't really save that much on the two I have. They will probably fail before I hit the 999 limit. LOL

It isn't always a timer or even limit. I have came across shows where the DVR (both Hopper and ViP's in my experience) that the timer will store SOME but NOT others. As one example, I set up a timer for Finding Bigfoot (yes, laugh if you will, but millions watch it :)), and immediately noticed that the timer set to record the OLD FBF (I had set it to NEW), but not the NEW FBF that aires immediately after. So, I canceled that timer and made a new timer using the OTHER Tile or entry on the guide, and then the timer showed it would record teh NEW FBF, but the OTHER entries had NO "cancel" icon, meaning that those weren't even in the timers list.

This has occurred with other shows over the years including (as best to my memory) Modern Marvels, some MTV programming like True Life, etc., and others I can't recall. The point is that there area shows where if you set a times, it won't necessarily put all shows on the schedule in the timers list, and I have MISSED a few recordings because of this. Learned this the hard way. As if ONE show is as if they were TWO different shows. I've even had to create TWO timers for the same show to have all the showings in the memory so that I would NOT miss my show. I hope I've explained this well. Like only half of Modern Marvels is in memory, but if I select another Modern Marvels entry with NO icon, now the other half will also be in memory and now ALL Modern Marvels are in memory to allow for no missed recordings. This seems to happen for a while, then it seems FIXED. Then another show will exhibit this, but them months later, it seems fixed.

Anyone else? This is a REAL bug.

I never set up a timer by selecting an entry in the guide (unless it's a one-time recording). I always use Dish Pass (Seek and Record) and it never fails me.

I have never used the Seek and Record before. Is that the better way to load timers? Is it faster or some other reason? I may try it out. Thanks dare2be.

No, seek & record really should only be used when setting a timer that doesn't have a guide entry.

That is a benefit of Seek and Record, but I want to hear the logic behind why it shouldn't be used outside of that condition.

I agree. And Seek & Record can take up your allotted events in memory in no time as it puts in memory all instances of the show from all channels. Seek & Record should be used only when necessary for an event or actor, etc that may not be in the guide yet, or if you DO want to have the ability of having in memory a show that airs across more than one channel such as multiple local PBS channels or your Golden Girls aired on like 4 different channels in long hours blocks. But a Golden Girls type event on Seek & Record will suck up or "clog" your memory fast.

Setting a timer from guide or as to record on that ONE channel only will save memory, and we use a WHOLE LOT of timers and events in memory, so we need to be as efficient as possible. Many parents with kids have found the Dish Pass and Seek & Record hell with those timers for those kiddie shows that air 20 times on one channel, another 20 times on the West Coast channel and another 30 times on a different channel. Unless you have only a few timers, use Seek & Record only when you want or need its advantages.
