I think they are doing this to show Clearwire and Sprint what they want to do with their service. From the video, it looks like they are using this model of radio http://www.bandrich.com/e500_over.html
In some situations they will want to use larger external antennas if the signal is weaker. The built in antenna is only 10-13 dbi which is not much. The tower cannot be that far away if they use that small of an antenna. They may choose to not install any if the signal is too weak though. I wonder if they will allow self installation.
This setup looks like the ones that wisp's (wireless internet service providers) have used for several years used with the ethernet cable sending the power and data from inside the home to the radio outside.

More importantly is for Dish to demonstrate their plans in order to get financing for their plans both build out and acquisition of other companies such as Clearwire.
They don't seem to have trouble getting financing.

Kinda dumb to even fool with - IMO they need to focus on making an adapter to go with all VIP receivers to hook up to any 3G/4G connection to get connectivity PERIOD vs this. They are pushing VIP's on to people that wouldn't get HD and don't have internet yet expect them to be connected.
Not dumb at all. could you imagine how cool and easy it would be to but this http://www.bandrich.com/e500_over.html onto the dish. Then plug that into the lnbf in to get power. Then all you gotta do is drop down a wifi connector in the house, then bam everything in the house is wifi.
They could not simply put it on the dish. It would need to point towards the direction of the tower which would most likely not be the direction of the satellite. In the ethernet cable that goes from the POE (Power over Ethernet injector) four wires are for data and four wires are for power for a total of eight wires. The ethernet wire goes into the POE in one end and the other end has another ethernet wire that uses four wires for data going to the router/switch or device that needs the data. That ethernet cord could be connected to the Hopper if you wanted to.
It depends on if there is enough room on the mast or not. I would think that the radio would hit on the dish unless they made a special bracket for the radio to fit on the curved portion of the mast. If they went with larger antenna setups as well in the future then it would require another mast completely.
