ESPN 3D Shutting Down at Years End

The main reason I started the thread here was for the Dish customers that have 3D TVS and always wanted Dish to get ESPN 3D. Thought everyone would like to know that you will no longer be missing out and Dish may have had good reason not to carry that channel.

I bought my TV because it was a 3D TV and we watch 3D whenever we can and we love it. I see the typical 3D haters are coming out. Great statements like "actually I've never watched anything in 3D, have no reason to ha ha. Brilliant. or this jewel, "the only 3D TV's we have sold is because they were such a great price". Yep, I'm sure that not one single customer bought because the TV was 3D, even though millions of owners buy 3D movies every year to watch on their 3D TV's. What a coincidence that over 140 3D movies have been produced in the last36 months. You know, like minor releases like Iron Man 3, Brave, The Lone Ranger, Man of Steel, Avatar, Life of Pi. The only 3D groupies out there are the haters.

Everyone I talked to said the 3-D for Man of Steel was terrible. I don't hate 3-D, nor do I own a 3-D TV but if Disney sees no future in it then 3-D usage must be terribly low when it comes to subscription TV.

A problem I see with a lot of these 3D movies coming out is they were not shot in 3D... but instead were converted to 3D, so its not real 3D but pseudo 3D.

I think if your seeing a 3D movie in a theater then it should have been shot in 3D.

Very true about converted 3D movies. It's much much easier to shoot a animated movie in 3D because the effects are all computer generated. I watched
Fright Night" last week and even though it was converted it was very nice. In the 3D re-release of Jurassic Park they spent 9 months converting the movie. I've yet to see it but I expect it to look excellent. I have not seen any of the newer 3D releases at theaters but the reviews are pretty good, The Lone Ranger, Star Trek Into Darkness, The Great Gatsby, Iron Man 3, Man of Steel, Monsters University, World War Z.

"......I'd much prefer a true-to-life picture with a high bit rate than to waste bandwidth on 3D."

Our eyes see 3d everyday. 3D is true to life. Your current 2D tv is not true to life. It is a technology limitation. 2D computer aided design is now antiquated. 3D modeling is where reality is. Even in war zones they need 3D modelling to aim correctly.

The 3D forum is a place for those who like 3D to discuss it, not a place who hate 3D to go in and say how much they hate 3D.

Forgive me Scott, but for the life of me, I don't see why the 3D forum can't be frequented by those who want to discuss it NEGATIVELY, as well as positively. If some people hate it (and I don't know who that might be) for their own reasons, that's simply their opinion, and IMHO not a reason to close the thread and declare them "haters". That's just name calling, and avoiding the issue. I don't know this but I will guess. The people posting negative comments in the 3D forum vastly outnumber those posting positive comments, and the 3D lovers can't stand being outnumbered or facing the fact that 3D isn't as great, or as popular, as they think it is.

Well this sound's like Charlie may have been right about there just wasn't enough reason to have 3D. That Dish would wait and see sounds like smart thinking on his part. I really feel that 3D is more something that needs to be experienced in the large screen that immerses one in the picture.
Didn't stop the ridicule of Charlie and Dish though... Who thinks that any from that crowd will acknowledge that Charlie/Dish was right ? :D

So a catch 22 has been created. (Well almost this thread still open) Can't post negative in a thread devoted to 3D and not supposed to start one in Dish forum for Dish subscribers to debate. SATGUYS is one of the best when comes to this so I can't get too excited over it but letting only posts pro 3D is very perplexing. So what if Dish never had Espn 3D since there are virtually no 3D channels anywhere (which should be a clue to the debate) it's only natural it would be discussed here.

I enjoy 3D at the theater, but I'd just be happy if someone would make some sort of clip-on 3D glasses for use at the movie theathers. I wear prescription eyeglasses, and trying to wear IMAX or Real3D glasses over my regular eyeglasses is a major PITA. Even when I get them situated the best I can, I get an extra glare as light bounces off my eyeglass lenses back to the backside of the 3D lenses.

The Krell, you have such a nice pool.

You mind of I come over and pee in it?

Same thing.

Each forum here is to help people learn more and get the most from their equipment. It is not a place to come and just crap on things because you don't like them.

If you want to dump on 3D feel free to do it in the Chit Chat Forum. :)

... and if you already wear glasses the 3D glasses are even MORE of a pain.

3D TV has a number of problems that are holding back its acceptance. That's too bad IMHO, because the less it's accepted by the general public the less likely it is to be widely available at a reasonable price, and the less likely companies will invest in improving the technology. Some of the problems I can think of (in no particular order) are
  • There are some people (about 10 or 15 per cent of the population) who simply cannot see in true 3D. They get their depth information from other visual cues that don't do them much good for 3D movies
  • The need for glasses is a real turn off and most 3D glasses are poorly made and very uncomfortable to wear
  • 3D movies require a bright picture to be watched without strain. Many TV's just aren't bright enough.
  • The bandwidth requirement for good 3D is large. Off-air and especially satellite just can't supply the bandwidth, so things like ESPN 3D start off with a real disadvantage for a good viewing experience.
  • The best 3D in-home experience available today comes from 3D Blu-Rays. But that requires not only a 3D TV but a 3D Blu-Ray player which of course costs more money.

So, much as I like to watch 3D TV, I am not hopeful that it will survive.

That's it..... I'm out of here! ;)

Liking 3D is a matter of choice. You like it or you don't. If you like it, it does not make you wrong for liking it.

I like Coke and hate Pepsi.
The 3D forum is a place for those who like 3D to discuss it, not a place who hate 3D to go in and say how much they hate 3D.

If I would have saw this topic the other day I probably have closed it since its not really a DISH topic since DISH never carried ESPN 3D.

Also I said it before ESPN had a lot to do with the demise of ESPN 3D as most providers charge $9 to $12 a month for the one channel. Even if you are a 3D fan that was too much to pay for a channel which was showing basketball games from 2 years ago in 3D.

Scott, seriously then can we apply that to the Dish threads - no peeing, no negative comments? Ditto the Direct TV threads? If you want to be negative about Dish or Direct do it in the Chit Chat thread? I personally think dissenting views are needed in the forums, letting threads of only positive (or I suppose negative) posts seems very counterproductive. I have learned from people who are negative about Dish, or about any subject and have modified my own views because of it.

No.

There is a big difference between talking about DISH and then a separate technology forum and trashing that technology.

Going to the DISH forum and writing why you have issues with DISH is different then going to the 3D forum and just writing 3D sucks.

In the DISH forum you are helping other, but as far as 3D goes, saying 3D sucks adds nothing to the topic. People know if they like 3D or not already, that forum is there to support those with 3D equipment. Again telling them 3D sucks adds nothing to the conversation.

As I said if you want to discuss that you think 3D sucks then feel free to in the Chit Chat forum, not the 3D Support forum. I am sure there could be some good conversation on 3D including 3D sucks. But lets keep the 3D Support forum for 3D support. That is all. :)

OK, I posted a "3D sucks" thread in the Chit Chat Club, even though I don't believe it. That is because I want to know the good as well as the bad, or I can't make an informed decision about taking the 3D plunge.

IMHO the closure of threads and prohibited discussion has gone WAY beyond just those who post "3D sucks" and nothing else. Closures include news reports, and discussion of news reports, and some very informative (to me) threads that I wish had continued. I for one do not have a 3D TV, nor a 3D Bluray Disk player, but I have had some fabulous experiences with 3D in theaters, and I wonder when I should take the plunge. I guess I'll have to go off-site to find the unvarnished truth.

This isn't quite what I was hoping this thread to turn into. It was more so just to let Dish customers, who are 3D enthusiast, know that they will no longer be missing out on one of the 3D channels they hoped Dish would get.
