Got promotional material in the mail from Directv and was comparing our service with our current Dish package. We have everything with Dish, but are wanting to upgrade to either the Hopper or Genie, whichever one is better and cost less. Our dilemma is that we have a lot of stuff on our external harddrive related to things we copied over from our dvr. Will that be compatible with the directtv service in anyway or do we either lose it or have to watch it all before we switch over?

Nope, it won't be viewable on the DirecTV equipment at all. And unless those EHDs are eSATA instead of USB, they won't even work on D*'s equipment.

As far as which is better, Genie or Hopper, that is a personal opinion depending on how/what you watch.

But as far as cost, Dish will likely want some money to upgrade, how much depends on the classification they have your account in.

Direct will offer the moon and stars, just like Dish does for a new/returning customer.
?

If you upgrade to a Hopper, your EHD contents will still be viewable. People have reported sporadic problems transferring titles to their Hopper, occasionally getting corrupted, but otherwise, you would not lose your EHD recordings. However, if you switch and then come back to Dish, you would have a new account number and your EHD contents would not be accessible anymore.

If you switch and cancel Dish, you will permanently loose everything you have on the ehd. It will not be viewable if you ever come back to Dish. The ehd is linked to the current account number.
Look at the long term pricing. While the first year rates of D* may look good, check out what they will go up to in year 2.
As others have said, contact DIRT about upgrading.
How many hdtv's do you have?

Keep in mind that a EHD with DirecTV REPLACES the internal HDD. And is locked to that particular receiver. With Dish, the EHD supplements the internal HDD and you can move the EHD to other receivers as it is locked to the account not a single STB.

This will matter a lot to you, even if you only have one receiver, in case that box dies. Your D* EHD content will be lost but with Dish you could just plug the EHD into the replacement receiver.

Then it looks like a Hopper and 1 Joey would work for you.
That would give you HD on both tv's. 3 sat tuners and if you have ota available, you could add the ota module to give you a 4th tuner. If you watch a lot of Prime Time networks in the evening, you could turn on Prime Time Any Time and record all 4 on 1 tuner. You would be able to access the dvr plus the ehd from both the Hopper and the Joey. If you got the Hopper with built in sling, you could access your dvr when you travel from a laptop or any other mobile device and watch either live TV or what you have dvr'd on the internal HD..

Thanks!Wasn't sure how that worked because one thing I wanted was to be able to record more than 2 programs At once. We do watch network tv and then a few cable shows that I have to set on one of the later play dates to get them all in.

Or...you could get a 722k and a 612. Would cost you $2 less in monthly fees and your and your buddy's programs could remain separate, if that is important to you. You would then have 2 tuners each, but no PTAT.
