The MPEG4 transition continues!

Reliable sources report that these markets are expected to go to dual East (HD)/West (SD) in first quarter followed by shutdown of West(SD) sometime before the end of 2014.

Dothan, AL
Elmira, NY
Ft. Wayne, IN

Peoria/Bloomington, IL
Rockford, IL
Tallahassee, FL/Thomasville, GA

What? No Charlottesville? :( (I say that because I'm rather fond of Charlottesville, having lived there while attending TJ's university.)

So does this mean that by the end of 2014 dish plans on forcing those markets to HD receivers if they want their locals?

What if you have HD Duos? I know the HD feed would be there, but would the SD feed of the channel not be there?

That's how I read it, 3HaloODST. And for other locals on EA, there is no SD channel if there is an HD channel. So I think Mojo Jojo is also right.

By the sounds of it, SD feed would be removed by the end of 2014. The HD receivers can still down-convert the HD feeds to SD though.

Unless they change practice there would not be both HD and SD feeds for locals. Eastern arc is all mpeg4 SD and HD, so even if they had SD feeds, it would still require an HD receiver.

Naw, I just got distracted for a few minutes. Great minds think alike.

So anybody who has a WA view but no EA view loses their locals altogether? That's gonna be a lot of customers if it ever happens around here.

What is the goal of doing this? Is Dish trying to free up bandwidth on WA by moving these locals to EA?

No doubt there will some of that, but EA should be a good bit higher in the sky for these markets. Overall there will probably be fewer problems getting a clear view, good for Dish long term, but sucks if your one of the unlucky ones.

There a lot of customers with no LOS to EA so if/when it happens around here that's probably gonna mean a lot of new DirecTV customers.

Well, hopefully they have the good sense to have you come out a verify if that is a fact or to investigate the possibility of another location for their dish. I did not think I had LOS to 129, but a tech came and proved me wrong. Perhaps you might find the same.

If i could pick up 61.5 in both Seattle and San Diego, seeing it from the eastern half of the country is easy!

Except all those dishes on the western side of apartment buildings, I can think of about 30 or 40 that I personally installed, then there are the western side of hills and mountains, etc., etc.

And when you're in an area of mountains and trees like we are, yes there are a LOT.
