DISH Reaches Long Term Agreement with DISNEY / ESPN / ABC

That seems doubtful. ABC has no control over the non-O&O stations. What happens when there is a dispute and they're pulled off of Dish?

Autohop kills the network commercials. Those are commercials ABC has sold advertisers that are guaranteed so much viewership (i.e. gross ratings points). Whether the commercials are being skipped on their owned stations or affiliates' stations it does not matter, they lose a viewer with every hopper. For them to settle the lawsuit you can bet they want revenue from every hopper, not just customers in their O&O markets.

If a station is in dispute and pulled off Dish, the commercials are not being autohopped....

I'm sick of this..."they lose a viewer with every hopper"

commercials lose a viewer every time the skip button is pressed, autohop or not, so that diminishes the financial impact of autohop
commercials can't be autohopped the day of the airing, so that diminishes the financial impact of autohop even more
this is even more offset by the fact that more potential commercials will get to the eyes of the viewer the day of airing since PTAT automatically records shows that the viewer may not normally, and may watch more shows that they normally wouldn't

These lawsuits and the people who defend them are way overstating the impact of autohop.

I am not defending the networks, I was just pointing out their point of view. In my opinion paying the networks for autohop is actually a good thing since it legitimizes the whole process and lets other providers do the same thing. Not that I thought it was "illegal", but that the networks would eventually withhold programming from providers that had automatic skipping hardware since they could not defeat it in court.

I guess I'm in the minority here. I could live without all of the Disney channels. If the channel provider is confident of making the deal, you know that we're all going to pay for it. Wouldn't it be nice if we could opt out (other than dropping every pay provider out there).

me too. espn during football season, but other than that it is rarely watched the rest of the year and the rest of the Disney suite of channels are blocked in our favorites guide listings

So does delaying autohop a few more days so that the autohopping falls outside of the neilson ratings window. No money is changed hands that way.

I am surprised the networks haven't simulated a commercial break in the middle of a show so that the hopper would skip an important part

Juan what part if they have someone watch the show and log the times of the commercial breaks don't you get?

I think a good compromise would be to delay auto-hop to the 2nd day. Anyone who really wants to watch a show would either have to suffer thru commercials or manully skip them.

I would have no issue with that at all. I have no pressing need to watch a DVRd show the next day....

It's already delayed, you can't use it until after 1am. If you want to watch right after PTAT has recorded you have to manually skip the commercials.

We do not use PTAT or auto hop. We just record the shows we watch from the networks. Less than 20% of those offered. We use ff or skip to jump commercials as we did with older receivers. If Dish starts charging for the feature, they need to make it an option. If not, we will definitely go to the 722K receivers again. If not allowed to do that, we will have to switch to Direct TV.

problems with DVD and DVR since hooking up new TV

Is this the same ehd ???
