I had my Shaw 530 receiver quit working today. (HD DVR from a few years ago). It worked fine over the years considering I mainly used it for the unique content from the north.

I have thinking about buying the 630 to replace it, however, is it pretty reliable? Is playback smooth? I've read some mentioned jittery playback.

Also, I often put live sports I watch on about a 25 second slip delay by pausing on the 530 so I can sync it up with an alternate audio I prefer from the net.

Would the 630 allow me to pause in the same way, watch how many seconds I'm behind on screen and play without any jitter and whatnot on a slight delay like this?

I appreciate any advice. It's just a bit expensive when it's my extra service and I can't get the new 3rd sat, but I still like the content available as of this time.

the 630 can be tricky. some people have had lots of problems with theirs. Mine has worked really well for me. I was getting occasional spontaneous reboots when recording multiple shows early winter, but those stopped once I cleared the event log.

The 630 will allow you to pause and then watch on a delay. you just can't change the channel while doing this

Thanks for that review!!

Hopefully I get a good one. My 530 worked fine for 5.5 years.

So when you say cleared the event log, do you mean deleted every show on the receiver? I see people mention that on various sites. Sounds like a bit of a bummer to delete your shows, but at least I know the trick.

no, the event log is under a hidden menu. if it gets too big, it can slow down the performance of the receiver. mine got to over 200 pages.

What the key sequence for the hidden menu to dump the event log? My 630 is rebooting often

Thanks

I have been happy with my 630. I don't know how anyone watches tv without a PVR, to tell you the truth. It's pretty much the only way we ever watch tv.

I was warned against the 630 prior to buying it. I was told it was unreliable, etc. It can be a little quirky and the interface isn't the most intuitive, but considering the alternatives (watching live tv), I am ok with its shortcomings. I have had mine for a couple years now. It will, on occasion, freeze up. It only happens once every so many months. When that happens, I turn it off (if it is responsive), unplug it, and then let it boot back up again. It's fine after that.
