Windows 8.1 Update 1 released, now available for download

Metro is great for a tablet. But it just makes no sense with a mouse and keyboard.

So far, Im pretty pleased with Windows 8.1 with Update. Oh, and I have already installed Start8.

I have the option to go from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1 Pro at work. For those who have done this would it be worth it? Our CEO is running Windows 8.1 Pro and is the only one in our division with 8.x.

IMHO, yes. It is worth it.

Yeah I been on Win8 for awhile now at home and have not had any issues with it and starting to move more users over to it in the work place. :)

I would say if you were getting a new machine may as well go to windows 8.1. But, it is not beneficial enough to go through the hassle of upgrading windows 7.

I know I'm behind here. I'm currently using Windows 8.

I recently realized there's a Windows 8.1 and now a Windows 8.1 update 1.

Is it okay if I stay with Windows 8 or should I go through the hassle and do the 2 updates?

While there is technically no reason you couldn't stay on Win8, in reality the plusses to doing the upgrade to 8.1 and then the 8.2 update 1 are pretty big. One of the biggest plusses is that there is no downside to doing the upgrades/update that I've read about.

I'm running 8.1 w/update 1 on my SurfacePro, Asus T100 and older Acer i3 laptop and have found nothing that doesn't work right after the updates/upgrades.

Is there a video showing the 8.1 improvements? Or even walking thru it or 8.0?

If you have a fully patched Windows 8, it will go right to Windows 8.1 Update 1 without having to do Windows 8.1 first.

The biggest improvements of 8.1 update 1 are boot to desktop if you do not have a touch screen and all the apps now have a red X in the upper right corner when you move your mouse there.

Just a word of warning to the unwary like me. I saw the first post that said the start menu is back. Well I uninstalled StartIsBack only to find there is no start menu whatsoever. It's the same godd@mn app screen we had before, maybe with larger icons. What a disappointment. I had to reinstall StartIsBack within 30 seconds. Besides the addition of the close button for apps mentioned above, I see nothing new. Man, I hate Windows 8.

If you right click you get a poor substitute for the old start menu.

One big improvement of 8.1 is that it lets you get out of logging in through a Microsoft Account which I stupidly created when I initiallized my first W8 machine. It also gives you a modified Start button. It still doesn't support POP3 mail and news servers which most local ISPs use. a**holes! Why did they take that support away?

Microsoft has stated they will stop supporting Windows 8 "base." Though, they have not said when. I would suggest updating.

It's because it's their desire for you to become dependent on THEM.

Actually Win 8, 8.1 and 8.1 update let you create a local account. They just hide the option very well.

If you're referring to POP3 servers I'll bite. How do you do it? When I tried to create a Windows Mail account on my W8 machine I gave the app my ISP, PenTel Data (ptd.net) and it came back a few seconds later telling me that POP3 mail servers weren't supported. I downloaded Thunderbird and haven't looked back.
