I have a VIP612 DVR in the shop/cave. The past few weeks it has had the green power light on when I have gone out there after it has been off. It wont turn on or off, the tv screen is just black when I turn the tv on. I can hear the fan running in the dvr. When I press and hold the power/reset button on the front of the dvr, the fan will speed up, the green light will go out. When I release the power button, the green light will come back on and the fan will slow down. The only way I can reset it is by unplugging. It has happened 3 or 4 times lately.

Thanks for any help.

Does it start working as normal after you unplug it and plug it back in? It's possible the receiver is going bad.

I had two 612's fail on me earlier in the year. They both had blank screens w/no screen saver when I turned the TV on, but nothing happened when trying to turn it on. They could be partly rebooted with the long-hold on the power button, but most of the time they'd get hung on the way up. If they ever made it all the way up, they were good to go until the next 3AM reset, at which time they would get hung up again and go back to the blank screen.

Yes it works normal after unplugging and powering back up.
Get an external HD and while it is working transfer any important programming to the HD add the protection plan for low cost replacement of the 612. Then order a replacement, seeing 612's are long out of production it will be replaced with a refurbished DVR.

What do you have in the house? How far is the shop from the house? Have you considered go to a Hopper/Joey set up?
I have a vip722k in the house. I had tv2 split between a couple tvs in the house and in the shop. Was given a plasma for the shop so had the 622 installed there. It's just me, so,going with the hopper and joeys was going to be more money.
The 622 is 2 years old in December. Any warranty on it?

If you own it, only if you have the PP, if leased, then and don't have PP then it is the standard shipping fee only for a replacement. Last I checked it was $90-95 for a replacement to an owned receiver out of warranty without PP

Do you have a 612 or a 622?

With the Protection Plan no shipping fee no replacement fee just the PP fee for 8mo. or penalty fee for early cancellation.

Called Dish and they are sending me a replacement receiver free. Also checked on a Hopper and 2 joeys but it would raise my bill by $9/month. Guess I'll stay with what I have now.

Which is ... another failing ViP612?

I grant it's more money, but old receivers aren't likely to be as reliable as new.

Which is ... another failing ViP612?

Earlier this year both my 612's crapped out within a month of one another, and both were replaced by Dish for $0. Thanks Dish! :clapping So far, both refurbs have been sterling. :p

Refreshing this thread. I have a VIP612 that freezes up. When it does the remote does not work and the only way to unfreeze it is to hold down the reset button or unplug it. It reboots and after about 10 minutes I get the picture back. I've tried other receivers in that spot and the problem stays with the 612. I've call Dish to get a new one (I have the PP) but get VERY frustrated when the CSR keeps asking me to do things over and over again eg "hit the menu button on the remote" - I have told you the ONLY button that works is reset!!
Is there a "shortcut" to getting a replacement box sent out without 50 questions??

No question a DIRT member here will get it done for you. Never call a DISH CSR again. No, seriously never call them again. :)
